Undercard Results from the Hard Rock in Las Vegas

By Nick Bellafatto–Ringside

Las Vegas, NV ( January 27th, 2013)–Looking for his third professional victory in a TV swing bout, former Olympian and junior middleweight prospect Errol Spence Jr. (3-0, 3 KO’s) of Desoto, Texas would get it after landing the first significant punches of the fight to stop the winless overmatched Nathan Butcher (0-2) of Huntington, West Virginia at 1:03 of the very first round in a scheduled four-rounder.

In a scheduled ten-round lightweight contest, undefeated former 2008 Mexican Olympian Francisco Vargas (14-0-1, 11 KO’s) of Mexico City, Mexico would make short work of his more experienced Memphis, Tennessee opponent Ira Terry (26-11, 16 KO’s), knocking Terry out with a solid right hand at 1:49 of the second round. After an even first round, Terry came out with an aggressive body attack to open round 2. However, turning the tables it appeared that Vargas would land a hard shot to the ribs that would cause Ira to slow, later opening up that finishing right hand.

Philadelphia, PA’s undefeated Julian Williams (11-0-1, 6 KO’s) would in yet another junior middleweight contest scheduled this time for eight rounds stop Newport News, Virginia’s Jeremiah Wiggins (10-2-1, 5 KO’s) at 1:05 of the seventh round due to the Wiggins corner throwing in the towel. In a most entertaining bout the shorter Wiggins would hold his own as the busier fighter early on as well as in other rounds only to see Williams find a home for his right hand as well as left hook which when landed would debilitate his opponent. In the end, Jeremiah was in the eyes of his corner taking too much of a licking even though he kept on ticking.

In the featherweight division, unbeaten southpaw Julian Ramirez (7-0, 5 KO’s) of Los Angeles, California would remain so in facing the more experienced but less successful Juan Sandoval (7-12-1, 4 KO’s) of San Bernadino, California, garnering a unanimous six-round decision by scores of 59-53, and 60-52 twice. Simply the better all around fighter who aggressive throughout would throw and land in combination to drop Sandoval in the opening frame, Ramirez would also prove quite elusive defensively as well for a dominant showing.

Jermall Charlo (11-0, 7 KO’s) out of Houston, Texas and fighting at junior middleweight would retire Westerly, Rhode Island southpaw Joshua Williams (8-5, 5 KO’s) after five complete in a scheduled eight-rounder. With Williams not much for head movement as well as being the slower fisted fighter, he would be victimized endlessly by the much sharper and harder hitting Texan who one step ahead throughout would reduce Joshua to nothing more than a punching bag, prompting the Williams corner to fold.

Chad Bennett (31–4-3, 22 KO’s) of Newcastle, Australia would in a scheduled ten-round affair at junior middleweight end things before the distance, stopping Accra, Ghana’s Ben Ankrah (17-12, 8 KO’s) at 0:59 seconds of the third frame with a plethora of head shots that stiffened Ankrah’s leg’s for the ten-count. Ankrah would give a good account of himself in round 1 as a decent counter-puncher, but also clear from the get go was that Chad Bennet was by far the harder puncher, dropping Ankrah with a right hook in the second, to then finish matters in the very next round.

Will Sands (3-0-2, 1 KO), also of Newcastle, Australia, would begin the day’s action at “The Joint” inside the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino taking on San Juan, New Mexico’s Herb Begay (0-0-2) in a four-round middleweight attraction. Begay at 157 pounds to Sand’s 150 was bigger, taller, heavier handed, and after round 1 looking like a winner. But not in the best physical condition, Begay would begin to suck wind, allowing Sands back in the fight to the extent that the end result would be a split decision draw, 39-37 for Begay, 39-37 for Sands, and 38-38 even.
