Tyson Fury Calls Out Francis Ngannou for a Special Bout, with Mike Tyson as Referee
By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent
Manchester, UK (January 23rd, 2023)– Current Lineal World Heavyweight Champion Tyson Fury has proposed a special mixed rule boxing and Mixed Martial Arts professional bout with former UFC World MMA Heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou, now a free agent, boxing with four ounce gloves in a steel cage with Iron Mike Tyson as the referee.
Speaking on Radio Rahim, Tyson Fury stated “Francis Ngannou, I know you’re out of contract with the UFC. You want to earn some big boy money? Come see ‘The Gypsy King’ and let’s do a big, big fight for the baddest MF on the planet. Let’s kick it up spicy in a cage, (with) four-ounce gloves under Queensbury [rules], and let’s have a badass referee like ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson. Did I just sell that to the world? If the contract doesn’t get signed with (Oleksandr) Usyk next for the (our unification) fight of the century in boxing, then we’ll (my corner) do the Ngannou fight. Whether it’s going to be in Las Vegas or Wembley [Stadium in the United Kingdom], who will know. We will know quite soon I think. Because if these fellas (Usyk’s promoter) don’t start coming up and signing the contract for the fight of the century, then we’re moving on to greener pastures.”
Ngannou, now a free agent, is seeking to take a shot at professional boxing, and has called out World Boxing Council World heavyweight champion Tyson Fury and ex-world champion Anthony Joshua as his next desired big money opposition. Fury is already in 2023 negotiations for a world heavyweight titular unification match with the WBA, IBF, WBO, and IBO heavyweight king Oleksandr Usyk.
Fury might go for a bout with Ngannou if Usyk cannot be brought to the table, and an agreement can be signed within a reasonable time frame. “At the moment, everything seems to be going really, really well, but again there’s no pen to paper. We haven’t got a date or a site (yet for the Usyk bout). These things take time, and I’m not really getting involved. Frank Warren and the lawyer Robert, they’re going to sort it all out, so we’ll see what happens. I’m looking forward to that fight of the century with Oleksandr Usyk, and I’m naming it the fight of the century because the last fight of the century before this was Muhammad Ali versus Joe Frazier I, and before that it was Gene Tunney versus Jack Dempsey I.”
