Farmer vs. Bey Cancelled Again as Promoter Lacks Cash

Abu Dhabi (August 14th, 2022)– The scheduled main event ten-round lightweight bout between Tevin Farmer and Mickey Bey at Findlay Toyota Center in Prescott, Arizona did not take place on August 12, 2022. For Farmer and Bey, from the United Arab Emirates to the United States, a lack of good luck caused the first cancellation, and now a lack of cash on the part of the promoter caused the second cancellation.

UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan tragically passed away on May 13, 2022, forcing the postponement of the originally scheduled boxing card at Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai. Promotional group Bigger Than Life Sports & Entertainment, promoters of the event, rescheduled the boxing card in Prescott, Arizona, for August 12, 2022, with Redemption Pay-Per-View scheduled to the event live. There was not much public interest in buying pay-per-views at 30 dollars a pop for the Farmer-Bey scheduled 12 bout card. Farmer versus Bey did not draw much interest in the United States most probably due to the long inactivity of both combatants, and it left the promoter unable to sell the card.

The southpaw Farmer, 30-5-1 with six knockouts, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, who lost his International Boxing Federation World Super Featherweight title in January 2020 to Joseph Diaz (who then lost it to Devin Haney) has now been inactive for over two and a half years after the start of the COVID-19 Pandemic, and has been unable to get his career back on track. Bey, 23-3-1 with 121 knockouts, Cleveland, Ohio, a former International Boxing Federation World Lightweight titleholder, has fought just four times in the past eight years, and has also been inactive for over two and a half years due to the Pandemic.

A scheduled co-feature eight round bout between super middleweight prospects Lorenzo Simpson and Tyi Edmonds also did not take place over the promoter’s lack of funds. Devin Haney, in the Simpson camp, offered to pay the purse of Edmonds in cash to keep the bout going, but was refused due to a lack of a contract associated with the late purse offer.

12 bouts were scheduled on the Arizona card. At least five scheduled bouts took place. The Arizona card was supposed to open with seven preliminary four rounders which included five unbeaten prospects and the pro debut of Jordan “El Moreno” Martinez of Phoenix. BoxRec posted only one result for these bouts, if that did take place. 1-0 junior middleweight prospect Daniel Hilton of Prescott Valley, Arizona, scored a ridiculous first round knockout over 0-6 stiff Isaac Sifuentez of Texas.

Undefeated 7-0 Ghana flyweight prospect Mohammed Nii Ayikwei Aryeetey, fighting for the first time outside of Ghana, fought to an eight round draw with 11-7-1 Jeronil “Chocolatito” Borres of Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines. The cards went three different ways, 78-73 for Aryeetey, 79-73 for Borres, and 76-76 a draw. In a battle of southpaws, 5’4″ and 20-1 featherweight prospect Tremaine “The Mighty Midget” Williams of New Haven, Connecticut, won a 10 round decision over 31-10-6 Jetro Pabustan of General Santos City, Philippines. 24-3-1 lightweight prospect Keenan Carbajal of Phoenix knocked out 21-8-1 veteran Aelio Mesquita of Sao Paulo, Brazil, in the third round.
