FIVE-TIME WORLD CHAMPION GERVONTA DAVIS TO DEFEND WBA LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE AGAINST UNBEATEN CONTENDER ROLANDO ROMERO SUNDAY, DECEMBER 5 ON SHOWTIME PPV®
Undefeated Rivals Davis and Romero Square Off at
STAPLES Center in Los Angeles Headlining a
Premier Boxing Champions Event
Tickets on Sale Thursday at 10 a.m. PT!
LOS ANGELES (October 21, 2021) – Five-time world champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis, boxing’s hottest attraction, and hard-hitting, unbeaten lightweight contender Rolando “Rolly” Romero will settle their rivalry in the ring as they fight for Davis’ WBA Lightweight Championship live on SHOWTIME PPV on Sunday, December 5 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT from STAPLES Center in Los Angeles in a Premier Boxing Champions event.
Davis’ third-straight pay-per-view headlining attraction will see him battle his outspoken lightweight foe Romero, as the 26-year-old power-punchers put their unbeaten records on the line looking to close out the year with an emphatic victory.
Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by Mayweather Promotions, GTD Promotions and TGB Promotions, go on sale today, Thursday, October 21 at 10 a.m. PT and can be purchased at AXS.com.
“This is a very dangerous fight for both guys and it’s definitely ending in a knockout!” said Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions. “I can’t wait! Make sure you’re at STAPLES Center or tuned-in on SHOWTIME PPV on Sunday, December 5.”
“’Tank’ Davis is at the top of the boxing mountain and selling-out arenas coast-to-coast for a reason,” said Stephen Espinoza, President, SHOWTIME Sports. “His explosive power, style, and take-no-prisoners attitude make him a captivating, must-see attraction. ‘Rolly’ Romero poses a surprising and possibly overlooked challenge. He’s an ultra-confident, power puncher on a mission. He’s an underdog with something to prove and that makes him very dangerous. This is, by far, his biggest opportunity to date and he’s going to leave everything in the ring one way or another.”
Davis (25-0, 24 KOs), star of the Mayweather Promotions stable, added another highlight filled performance in June, as he stopped previously unbeaten Mario Barrios to capture a 140-pound title and become a three-division world champion. His previous outing saw Davis score an emphatic knockout over four-division champion Leo Santa Cruz in October 2020, making him the first person to ever drop the four-division champion. Davis has asserted himself as a must-see headline attraction ever since bursting onto the scene with an explosive knockout victory over Jose Pedraza to win the IBF Junior Lightweight World Title in a star-making performance on SHOWTIME® in January 2017. The Baltimore-native captured his lightweight championship with a 12th-round knockout of former champion Yuriorkis Gamboa in December 2019.
“I can’t wait to be back fighting in Los Angeles and give my fans another memorable night,” said Davis. “Romero is going to be sorry that he signed this contract. I’m going to punish him for as long as this fight lasts. Everyone knows I’m coming for the knockout, so make sure you get a ticket or buy the pay-per-view. Los Angeles is where the stars shine, and I’m going to be ready to put on a show on December 5 in front of all the stars.”
Also a member of the Mayweather Promotions stable, Romero (14-0, 12 KOs) backs up his brash talk with power in both hands and an exciting and unique style that makes him must-see whenever he steps into the ring. Romero won an interim title in August 2020 by earning a close but unanimous decision over then unbeaten Jackson Marinez. The 26-year-old followed that victory up with a pair of impressive knockout triumphs in his last two fights. He dominated slick contender Avery Sparrow on his way to a seventh-round stoppage in January of this year, before most recently dropping former title challenger Anthony Yigit three times on his way to another seventh-round stoppage in July. Representing his hometown of Las Vegas, the undefeated Romero began his pro career with knockouts in 10 of his first 11 fights.
“I’m so grateful for this opportunity,” said Romero. “I’m going to become a pay-per-view star quicker than anyone else in the sport starting December 5. I’ve accomplished more than almost anyone else with the number of fights I have, and there’s a whole lot more to come. Thank you to my whole team for putting me in this position. See you December 5!”
