Fight or Bite? Iron Mike Tyson Training For Comeback at 53
By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent
New York, NY (May 3rd, 2020)–From Jack Johnson to Jack Dempsey to Joe Louis, from George Foreman to Sonny Liston, from Smokin’ Joe Frazier toto Muhammad Ali to Wladimir Klitschko, many former heavyweight champions have returned to the ring for various reasons. There have been many attempts, Foreman regained the world heavyweight title past age 40. Jack Johnson was a feared boxer past age 50.
Now Iron Mike Tyson has returned to the gym and is training for an impossible comeback. Be it for charity, so he says, or be it for Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua, Deontay Wilder, Tyson says he is going to do it. This could be sort of the dramatic comeback publicity stunt professional boxing desperately needs to the sport back on its feet.
Speaking with Rapper T.I. from isolation on Instagram live last week, Tyson, 50-6 with 44 knockouts, Henderson, Nevada, has revealed he has returned to a full physical conditioning and boxing training regimen in preparation for his return to the ring, which for now will involve charity matches when Iron Mike deems himself ready to do battle.
According to Mike “I’ve been hitting the mitts for the past week. That’s been tough. My body is really jacked up, and is really sore from hitting the mitts. I’ve been working out. I’ve been trying to get into the ring (again). I think I’m going to box some exhibitions (in the future) and get in shape (back to fighting condition). I want to go to the box, and get in shape to be able to box three and four round exhibitions for some charities and stuff. I want to do some charity exhibitions, make some money, help some homeless and drug-affected mother…………..like me (as I once was).”
Tyson Fury has donated purses to charity. Whether the other Tyson can make the same sort of impact in the boxing world to help the less fortunate remains to be seen, but it is a noteworthy comeback. Iron Mike may yet get some professional boxing offers out of his comeback attempt for charity. Until the coronavirus pandemic ends, it remains purely speculation to second guess how far Iron Mike wants to go with his comeback, but for sure Iron Mike is still a big box office draw. In the meanwhile, Iron Mike has plenty of time in isolation to train, The original Tyson (Iron Mike Tyson) could draw even more viewers or pay-per-view buys than the current Tyson (Tyson Fury). However controversial, in the era after Muhammad Ali, Iron Mike Tyson made his statement inside and outside the ring. Here we go again. Iron Mike Tyson’s comeback attempt is almost like unreal Hollywood.
