The Strange Comeback of Australian Heavyweight Roger Izonritei

By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent

Roger Izonritei, 42, is back in the heavyweight mix. The native of Perth, Australia, has a record of 12-6-1 with 11 knockouts. After boxing professionally from 2000 to 2006, Izonritei returned to the ring over 10 years later in October 2016, and has a record of 1-1-1 in his comeback. His last bout ended in a controversial technical draw with Alex Leapai due to Izonritei being cut above the left eye from an accidental headbutt before three rounds had been completed, in what was supposed to be an eight-rounder at the Convention & Exhibition Centre in Brisbane.

On July 29 2018, Izonritei will face world ranked 25-1 Lucas Browne at The Punchbowl in a scheduled six rounder in Australia. Browne, a former WBA World Heavyweight champion, is coming off a six round knockout loss to Dillian Whyte. Roger Izonritei is going for the stars against ex-world champion Browne, who may or may not have something left after Whyte destroyed him. Roger Izonritei is going for broke in his comeback after surviving Leapai. The odds are against Izonritei beating a former world champion, but whatever happens Roger Izonritei’s comeback is going to end with a bang, one way or the other. Izonritei’s latest comeback bout is a wild longshot, but who knows?
