Fresno, California (November 12th, 2017)– Undefeated light welterweight contender Jose Carlos Ramirez (21-0, 16 KOs) destroys former unbeaten contender Mike Reed (23-1, 12 KOs) stopping him in the 2nd round on Saturday night at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, California.
The 2012 U.S Olympian Ramirez dropped the 24-year-old East Coast fighter in round 2. After Reed got back up, Ramirez finished him off with a flurry of punches that convinced referee Jack Reiss it was time to stop the fight. The official time of the stoppage was at 1:43 of round 2. Reed was down twice in the round, but the referee didn’t count the second knockdown. Reed fell while trying to grab Ramirez. It looked like a knockdown, but the man in charge saw it as a slip.
The fight was a title eliminator for the vacant WBC Junior Welterweight title that was vacated by the former undisputed champion Terence Crawford who has moved up in weight. Ordered by the WBC, Jose Ramirez will now have to face Amir Imam (21-1, 18KOs) who fought on the undercard against Jonathan Garcia, and won in dominating fashion by referee stoppage before he could start the 5th round.
“Most people underestimate my speed and defense, but they don’t understand it until they’re in front of me. I showed tonight what I mean by that,” Ramirez said.
“I’m thankful to be able to showcase my talent and my story to ESPN and that audience,” Ramirez said. “People from the East Coast, a lot of them are seeing me fight for the first time, and I’m glad I was able to give this type of performance to new followers who decided to watch me fight after reading articles about me.
“This could not have gone any better, to be honest.”
In an upset, Evan Torres (8-5, 5 KOs) won a four round split decision over previously undefeated Quilisto Madera (7-1, 4 KOs). The fight was all action from start to finish and Madera appeared to get caught off guard by the brawling nature of Torres.
The scores were 39-37, 39-37 for Madera and 39-37 for Torres.
