FORMER UFC FIGHTER TIM HAGUE DIES IN CANADA IN A PRO BOXING MATCH
Alberta, Canada (June 19th, 2017) AP– Boxer and former UFC fighter Tim Hague died Sunday after suffering a traumatic brain injury in a knockout loss Friday. He was 34.
“It is with incredible sadness, sorrow and heartbreak to report that Tim has passed away today,” Hague’s family said in a statement posted to social media Sunday. “He was surrounded by family, listening to his favorite songs. We will miss him so greatly. We ask for privacy during this difficult time.”
Hague, born in Alberta, Canada, made five appearances in the UFC from 2009-11 and went 1-4, losing his final four matches in the octagon. His overall MMA record was 21-13 with eight knockout losses, including four in the past 22 months.
As a boxer, his professional record was 1-3 with two knockout losses.
While not in the same league as UFC champion Conor McGregor, Hague’s death is certain to cast a new light on the issue of MMA fighters participating in boxing matches with McGregor and Floyd Mayweather’s highly anticipated bout just two months away.
Former UFC title challenger Anthony Johnson, who retired earlier this year at age 33, weighed in on Hague’s injuries Saturday with an Instagram post, saying: “This is why I walked away. This is a reality check for me! I’ve knocked a lot of ppl out and idk how this didn’t happen when I fought. I’ve been afraid of this happening to me and after learning about CTE I’m afraid of it happening to anybody.”
