Worst Boxing Card of 2016: Nine First Round Knockouts at Missouri NoPlace Bar

Saint Joseph, Missouri (April 21, 2016)– Everybody’s got an opinion of best and worst. Acting has its Golden Raspberry Award. Boxing has its Razzie as well. In 13 bouts on April 16, 2016, at NoPlace Bar, nine fighters exited in the first round. One lucky fellow made it to the second round, another made it to the third round before they got knocked out, giving NoPlace Bar in Saint Joseph, Missouri, the unique distinction of the Golden Raspberry Award in pro boxing this year so far. Five of the nine pro debuts on the card got knocked out. You needed a good bar drink to watch.
Two other bouts faired a bit better. A four round heavyweight bout between experienced heavyweights with winning records was at least competitive and went to a majority decision. The main event featherweight bout went the full eight rounds, with an undefeated fighter winning every round on the cards, and the trial horse opponent going the distance.
The number of first round knockouts on this particular card brings to mind the boxing rules for approval of a fighter to fight pro boxing vary from state to state. There is no way you could convince me cards like this benefit pro boxing. Bad matchups add to padded records, but do not benefit boxing in the United States where the sport is high profile.
Promoters should know better and keep bad matchups to a minimum. However, it can truthfully be said many barroom cards are ‘Butterbean’ style tough guy scenarios where most of these type brawler fighters are not expected to make it out of the first round.
