The New York Open Judo Team Championships – Recap

New York, NY (March 24th, 2016)– The 33rd New York Open held at the New York Athletic Center on March 20, 2016 was a star studded event featuring Olympic Gold medalist Kayla Harrison, Olympic Bronze Medalist Marti Malloy, Olympian Travis Stevens, and World Champion Clarisse Agbegnenou.   The event also had in attendance former American Olympian and Bronze Medalist Jimmy Pedro (who was the Coach of the US Team), Olympic Bronze Medalist Mike Swain and Olympic Bronze Medalist Amarilis Savón.

In the crowd were former Pride and UFC fighter Renzo Gracie, BJJ Black belt, Metamoris winner, and high level BJJ fighter Gary Tonon, and 2006, 2008 and 2013 US Judo National Champ and BJJ Black belt Gary St. Leger.

The New York Open was once again sold out and the capacity filled arena got their money’s worth with a variety of techniques from high throws, to amazing sweeps, to beautiful ground submissions.  The success of the event was a direct result of Mel Appelbaum, John Walla, Arthur Canario, and Carrie Gray’s hard work. The half time show featured Sensei Lloyd Llamas and Sung Mahn (James) Yim demonstrating Nage No Kata.

The New York Open featured two American Men’s team (including former two time US National Champ Shintaro Higashi), France, Germany, Georgia, and Canada.  On the womens side, the New York Open featured a French powerhouse team, Israel and the United States.

The men’s German team beat was able to end the two year title reign of the French men’s team and take the title.   The USA womens team took gold again and was able hold off the excellent ground work of Israel and throwing techniques of the French team.
