ANDRE WARD SAYS THE SERGEY KOVALEV FIGHT IS NOT A MATTER OF IF, IT IS WHEN
Las Vegas, NV (November 21, 2015)– In a Radio Rahim Interview With Andre Ward, Ward stated that negotiations with Sergey Kovalev are ongoing.
A deal was reportedly struck between Sergey Kovalev and Andre Ward to meet at some point in the last quarter of 2016 according to Main Events Owner, Kathy Duva.
As for the parameters of the deal, Duva told BoxingScene.com. “It’s for them to get in the ring and fight at some point next year,” she said, laughing.
“We’ve agreed on all the terms, everything is laid out and we’re not going to talk about all the particulars, yet, it’s a year away and a whole lot can happen between now and then.”
Kovalev,who holds multiple belts in the light heavyweight division, is scheduled to face Jean Pascal in a rematch on January 30th at the Bell Centre in Montreal on HBO.
“If all goes according to plan he’ll have one more fight after January before facing Ward,”explained Duva.
Kovalev vs. Ward is expected to be on HBO PPV.
“Absolutely,”said Duva on Saturday morning,”you got the two best fighters in the world facing each other. Two of the best pound-for-pound fighters, top five, top three on some people’s list. When you have the best, you can sell that.Yeah, that’s sellable and that’s a great event.”
As for where the venue might take place, Kathy Duva stated:
“We’ve already had conversations here in Las Vegas and conversations have been going on in New York with the Madison Square Garden and I’m sure there will be others between now and then.”
There is an agreement in the contract that Oakland, Ward’s hometown and Russia Kovalev’s home country are ruled out as potential fight locations.
