REAL COMBAT MEDIA WEEKLY BOXING REPORT – “Split Decision Edition“
By Zo Crooks,Real Combat Media Chicago Boxing Correspondent
We back in here! Another week of the Real Combat Boxing Weekly Report “Split Decision Edition”! Full report featuring last week’s PBC bouts with Sammy Vasquez, Julian Williams and Jamal James, fight week featuring AB (About Billions, Always Busy, Adrien Broner) vs Khabib Allakhverdiev title fight and Deontay Wilder defends his belt against Johann Duhaupas. As always we have updates on the latest news and notes on what’s going on in the boxing world!
“Be all you can be…” “Sergeant” Sammy Vasquez put them things on Jose Lopez! The PBC Showcase featured Vasquez in front of his home crowd in California, Pennsylvania. The undefeated Sergeant (20-0 14 KOs) was very impressive in his disposing of Lopez (25-4-1 14 KOs). Whether it was the left hook, the nasty uppercuts or the right hand…Sgt. Vasquez couldn’t miss! Lopez looked confused with Vasquez’s assault. This went on from the opening bell until Sgt. Vasquez stopped Lopez in the 5th round. Congrats to my man Vasquez!
“Here come Omar….” I’m not talking about Omar from “The Wire” but something like that! I’m talking about hot undefeated prospect Omar “Super O” Douglas (15-0 11 KOs). In the co featured bout on the PBC Card featuring Vasquez, Douglas wanted to make a statement…and you think he didn’t? He took on Braulio Santos (12-3, 10 KOs) but made eazy-work of his opponent! Douglas performance was just ruthless!!! This was the first time Douglas went past six rounds in a pro fight winning a unanimous decision.
“Lyte as a ROCK”…. Julian ‘J-Rock” Williams wasn’t playing around. In a PBC bout on Fox Sports 1 in Bethlaham, PA., not too far from his hometown of Philly, J-Rock took out Luciano Cuello in the first round. Williams made lyte work of Cuello (35-4, 17 KOs) to push his undefeated record to (21-0-13 KOs). J-Rock clipped Cuello with a right to the head and had that boy doing the whop! Then he followed that up with several right hands to the dome. The beat down was real. I thought Cuello would do a better job than that. Cuello went the distance with Julio Ceasar Chavez Jr. in a close bout in 2009 and went 6 round with Canelo Alvarez in 2010. He also came into the fight on a 3 fight win streak. I guess that didn’t matter. Next up for J-Rock seems to be Austin Trout. That should be a better test than Cuello. We shall see! J-Rock is the business….betta believe dat!!!
Fight til’ the End….It’s not over til it’s over! In the co-feature bout for PBC on Fox Sports 1 Mexico’s Moises Flores (24-0, 17 KOs), 28, retained his interim junior featherweight title for the first time by stopping Luis Cusolito (21-2, 19 KOs), 27, of Argentina, in the 12th round. Both men had their moments but Flores closed the show when the referee stopped the bout with 57 seconds left. Flores is now looking for a bout with Leo Santa Cruz (featherweight title holder} next! Be careful for what you ask for…..
Cold as the winter…..In the main event of the PBC bout in Winter Haven, Fl., hot prospect Jamal James of Minneapolis, MN took on Carlos Abreu of the Dominican Republic. James extended his undefeated record to (18-0, 9 KOs) in a hard fought welterweight battle with Abreu (18-2-1, 17 KOs). The fight was very entertaining with both fighters getting in shots all night! James and Abreu both got off the deck after knockdowns. Abreu was credited with a knockdown 30 seconds into the fourth round, but it was questionable. They both got down but James walked away with the unanimous decision.
Fight Week:
PBC on NBC features World champion Deontay “The Bronze Bomber” Wilder (34-0, 33 KOs) makes the second defense of his title when he faces France’s Johann “Reptile” Duhaupas (32-2, 20 KOs) on Saturday September 26th at the Legacy Arena in Birmingham, AL at 8:30PM ET Eastern Time / 5:30PM PT.
In the co-main event Former U.S. Olympian and Southern California native Dominic Breazeale (15-0, 14 KOs) puts his unbeaten record on the line against fellow heavyweight Fred Kassi (18-3-1, 10 KOs).
Showtime Championship Boxing presents AB (About Billions, About Business, Athletic Bastard etc.) Former three-division world champion Adrien “The Problem” Broner (30-2, 22 KOs) returns to his hometown looking for a fourth world title as he faces fellow former world champion Khabib “The Hawk” Allakhverdiev (19-1, 9 KOs) for the WBA Super Lightweight world title on Saturday, October 3 live on SHOWTIME (10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT) from U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio.
In the SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING co-feature, undefeated IBF Junior Lightweight World Champion Jose “The Sniper” Pedraza (20-0, 12 KOs) will defend his belt against veteran former world title challenger Edner “Cherry Bomb” Cherry (34-6-2, 19 KOs).
Also just added to the card Lightweight prospects Robert Easter Jr. and Jamel Herring, a 2012 U.S. Olympian, will both be featured in separate 10-round bouts on Showtime Extreme.
WORD IS…..
The bout between Floyd “Money” Mayweather and Andre Berto drew between 400K and 550K buys PPV buys. To many people that is a very low number especially for a Mayweather fight but consider this….how many fighters are doing a million or more for PPV? Go ahead…I’ll wait! To me that is a decent number considering the opponent he was facing. Berto is no bum by any means but he is not a big draw whatsoever! Floyd has done almost 5 million PPV buys this year total for 2 fights! Do the math homie!
Speaking of Money May….despite his retirement it has been announced that Money will be keeping his belts! Mayweather has not vacated the tiles, and neither the WBC nor the WBA has declared them vacant. We will see what happens but for me I hope that means that he is not retiring and is coming back to give us one more fight! Records are made to be broken!!!!
Manny Pacquiao is set to return to the ring in 2016 according to his promoter Bob Arum. Arum told ESPN.com on Monday that Pacquiao’s return will come in February or March — but no later than the second week of April — and take place at a venue to be determined in Las Vegas. No more “schlepping” to Macau, China, Arum said. “Manny will be fighting next year,” Arum said. “I think everything will be good for him to fight by February. He can probably start training by the end of this year. We’ll let the doctor tell us when. I thought maybe Manny would fight one or two more times, and when I said that, Manny corrected me. He said he wants to keep fighting.”
Scott Quigg vs. Nonito Donaire matchup seems to be dead! Quigg promoter Matchroom Boxing and Top Rank, Donaire’s promoter, were in talks for Donaire (35-3, 23 KOs), a former four-division titleholder, to travel to the United Kingdom (or Dubai, in a far less likely scenario) to challenge for Quigg’s secondary 122-pound belt on Nov. 21. Oh well. If it gets signed, sealed and delivered that would be a hell of a matchup! Hope they could make it happen one day.
