Ward has to back up his words on fighting the best by fighting Kovalev

Editorial By George A. Dampeer, Real Combat Media Washington DC/DE Boxing Correspondent

Las Vegas, NV (July 26, 2015)– Last Saturday night, Sergey Kovalev, as expected, made easy three round work of Nadjib Mohammedi. The difference in class was noticed immediately once the first clean right hand landed. Sergey now improved his record to 28 and 0 with 25 KOs and sits pretty among the top his competitors with the exclusion on Al Haymon’s elephant in the room. Other than that fight, there is just one real big fight for Sergey to make, and with the recent announcement of Golovkin vs Lemieux for Oct 17, all signs point to a Ward vs Kovalev fight.

The fist back and forth between GGG and SOG went on long before the fighters recent appearance on ESPN’s Sports Nation, but some fans may have thought we were close to seeing something materialize between the two.It seemed like the wheels were finally get put into motion after Ward’s tune up of Paul Smith back in June, but no. Once again it seems that an agreement could not be reach. Reports suggest theres still a problem negotiating the fighters share of the pie which is ridiculous. Its any easy 50/50 split. Golovkin is a popular attraction and will fill most westcoast and maybe even some east coast venues. Ward is the more accomplished and prestigious fighter, but doesn’t fight elsewhere than Oakland and doesn’t not always have the place in full capacity. 50/50 makes more than enough sense. Its seems there maybe more there between the two. Ward looks irritated at the fact that the GGG camp is trying to “win the media battle”, but if I’m not mistaking… is that not who you use when the negotiating party isn’t complying? Granted, Ward had his issues with the late Dan Goosen that he did not speak of until later. However, for someone that called you out while you were handling business behind the scene and raging because you couldn’t speak about it; wouldn’t you want that fight to be the top of your list once you had things taken care of? This is where we as writers and boxing fans have to consider the grand scheme. This of course is a business , no matter how many times we maybe irritated about that.

Like they say, ‘One man’s trash, is another man’s treasure’ and while Kovalev may look like a trash man, he’s been picking up treasure at every corner. When Adonis Stevenson made the switch, and made almost certain a fight between the two would never happen many thought it would dampen Kovalev’s career. Since the switch however, Kovalev has looked the more fearing fighter. Stevenson having only fought Bika in a dull match. Kovalev started the year in a dominate, but exciting match against Jean Pascal, and again last night in another dominating performance.

Back to the matter at hand that is Ward. Before GGG announced his October fight, Ward was on the fence of what weight he would be fighting at since his fight with Paul Smith was a catchweight of 172. Many saw it more as test of going up in weight to fight bigger opponents rather than just a tune up to eventually go back down. Imminently after that Smith fight, Ward talked about wanting to “fight the best” and that “the division is always moving- guys can be ppv draws just like that and can lose it just as fast”. If this is true than there is only two things to take away from this; 1. Kovalev seems to be sticking around enough to possibly be PPV-worthy and 2. It’s time Ward fights Kovalev!
