Las Vegas, NV (May 2, 2015)– Floyd Joy Mayweather Jr. (47-0 26 KO) aka “Money” of Grand Rapids, MI was born into a boxing family. His dad Floyd Sr (current trainer) was a former welterweight contender who fought Hall of Famer Sugar Ray Leonard. His uncles Roger, won two major titles in two different weight classes, and Jeff who won the IBO junior lightweight title.
Boxing has been a part of Floyd’s life since birth and he never considered any other profession. “I think my grandmother saw my potential first. When I was young, I told her I think I should get a job.” She said, “No, just keep boxing”.
It’s in his DNA. Floyd Sr. taught lil Floyd everything that he knows. Floyd Sr. said, “he learned everything from his daddy, and like I said before I trained him when he was a little kid when he won the first national tournament…the defense that he uses is the defense that I taught him-the shoulder roll”.
Go to youtube and pull up the fight of Floyd Maweather Sr. vs Sugar Ray Leonard and you will see the similarities in their fight style. The fast hands, the way he rolls and slips punches, and the counterpunching abilities are all the tools that Money Mayweather has in his arsenal today. Floyd Sr. also passed down a sweet check left hook. Floyd Jr. is more of the 5.0 version of his father. He has perfected this “Mayweather” style and took it to another level.
We all know the history now. When Floyd Jr. was 16, Floyd Sr. served time in prison. His uncle Roger took over the training duties at that point in his early career with Floyd Sr. being unavailable. However Floyd Jr. continued to fight exactly how his father taught him and continues to this day.
Saturday May 2nd , Floyd “Money” Mayweather will step in the ring Manny “Pac Man” Pacquiao with his dad Floyd Sr. as his trainer. Floyd Sr. took over trainer duties from Roger in 2013 when Floyd Jr. laced up against Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero. During that fight you can see the supreme defensive skills that his father implemented in him as a kid return to rare form as he defeated Guerrero with ease in a lopsided unanimous decision victory.
Floyd Jr. has only two fights left in his career and has a chance to retire undefeated. Through all of the ups and downs and documented drama that existed between the father and son over the years, his father is right there where he is supposed to be….in his corner!
