200 Million Dollars $$$$$$Can Floyd Play Pac Man and Win? The Hour Approaches
By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent
Las Vegas, NV (May 2, 2015)– Inside the final 24 hours, if you bet Floyd Mayweather Jr. to defeat Manny Pacquiao in the main event at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas Saturday night, May 2, 2015, the odds say you will lose money. The bookies favor Floyd to win by 12 round decision or by a technical decision, but not by a knockout, technical knockout or disqualification. The odds also say the fight will last longer than one minute and thirty seconds into the tenth round.
In Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’, the late Vincent Price states the ‘hour of doom is close at hand’. While there are no fireworks which will result from Pacquiao versus Floyd, both boxers will show. It is another Floyd rarity, when Floyd’s world title belts cover more than one weight class. What you can bet on is both fighters are coming in to win.
Floyd must be at the top of his game. Pacquiao will be looking to catch Floyd sleepwalking and build up an early and insurmountable lead on the cards. This would force an aging Floyd to slug it out with Pac Man, and as Hall and Oates so aptly sing ‘I Can’t Go For That, No, No Can do’.
Pac Man is going for broke. Both fighters are going in for the $$$. More money than this mega fight will make in Las Vegas was offered to state the bout in the United Arab Emirates. On one hand, Floyd waited too long and Pac Man held out too long. On te other hand, perhaps the controversy and delay about this mega bout ever taking place has made it more of a curiosity and a wonder due to the delay.
Of critical scrutiny is Floyd’s quality of opponent. There has not been one until Pacquiao took this mega bout. Pac Man could win a close hard fought decision over Floyd. Pac Man’s decisions have gone both ways, while Floyd’s have always gone for Floyd. The sort of work required by both men to win this bout is extraordinary. The fighter who wants to win a little bit more has the slight edge. On the other hand, the role of the game plans, and the role of the corners of the fighters, all figure into the final equation. The purse is 200 million dollars. Floyd will get approximately 60% or $120 million, Pacquiao $80 million. The Federal income tax rate is 39.6% on their prize winnings. The high income Medicare tax is 1.45% and the additional Medicare surcharge tax is 0.9% The number of $99 Pay-Per-Views purchased will determine whether the actual purse is higher or lower for both boxers. Nevada has no state income tax. Pacquiao’s last two bouts in Macau had a 12% tax.
