New York, NY (January 10th, 2015) — In the main event of an eight bout boxing card at Madison Square Garden broadcaston Fox Sports 1 and Fox Deportes, the debut event of Throne Boxing/ Jay-Z’s Roc Nation Sports, Tureano Johnson won the vacant WBA International and WBC Silver Middleweight titles with a fifth round referee’s technical decision over Alex Theran, who did not answer the bell for round five. Johnson, 18-1, 13 knockouts, Nassau, Bahamas, scored his fifth consecutive win after losing to Curtis Stevens last year. Theran, 17-2, 10 knockouts, Barranqulla, Columbia, lost his WBA Fedalatin Middleweight title bout last year to Arif Magomedov in Moscow, Russia.
In the preliminary bout to the main event, Dusty Harrison, 25-0, 13 knockouts, Washinton, D.C., won the vacant WBC Continental Americas with a 10 round unanimous decision over Tommy ‘The Razor’ Rainone, 22-6, four knockouts, New York City. Rainone wononly one round on one judge’s scorecard in his hometown.
Number eighteen worldwide ranked BoxRec welterweight Chris ‘The Heat’ Van Heerden of South Africa, a former IBO World Welterweight champion, won the IBF International Welterweight title with a 10 round split decision over 20-0 Cecil McCalla of Maryland. Heerden, now residing in Santa Monica, California, has been lucky. Whether such luck could translate into a bout for a major world title at 147 pounds remains to be seen. Heerden won another split decision in ten in his last outing April 2014 over Ray Narh.
In a super middleweight outcome, 8-0-1 Andrew ‘Hurricane’ Hernandez of Phoenix, Arizona, won by disqualification over 2012 National Golden Gloves champion Jerry Odom, 12-1, Bowie, Maryland. Odom knocked down Hernandez, then hit him numerous times when he was on the floor. 4-0 welterweight prospect Kenneth Sims Jr. of Chicago, Illinois, won a six round decision over Christian Steele. 4-0 featherweight prospect Eduardo Martinez of Illinois won a four round decision over Rigoberto Miranda. 4-0-1 Dominican southpaw welterweight prospect Wellington Arias Romero scored a first round knockout at 1:24 over Lee Kreisher. Debuting New Jersey light welterweight Dustin Fleischer scored a second round stoppage over Frank Jordan.
WBA Champ Andre Ward Signs New Contract To Fight For Roc Nation Sports and Jay-Z
Super middleweight sensation Andre Ward has signed with Jay-Z and Roc Nation Sports, after Jay-Z bought out his contract with Goossen Promotions. Ward, a 2004 Olympic Gold Medalist, was promoted by Dan Goossen until Goossen’s death at age 64 last September. Ward, 27-0, 14 knockouts, has not fought since defending his WBA Super World super Middleweight title in November 2013. Ward expects to defend his WBA title in April 2015.
Roc Nation Sports Absorbs Gary Shaw Productions, Absorbs His Stable of Fighters
Jay Z’s Roc Nation Sports has absorbed Gary Shaw Productions, and now has his stable of 20 fighters. As part of the agreement, Shaw will co-run Roc Nation Sports boxing division with chief operating officer David Itskowitch. Shaw, who worked with Main Events from 1999 to 2002 before founding his own promotional company, worked with the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board (The NJCAB) from 1970 to 1999. Shaw’s final Gary Shaw Productions card took place last night as well, the season debut of ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights at Chumach Casino in Santa Ynez, California. 32-1 Darleys Perez of Columbia, won a 12 round decision over Jonathan Maicelo of Peru to retain the interim WBA World Lightweight title in the Gary Shaw ESPN2 Main Event.
