Miller Wins II

Heavyweight Jarrell Miller Interview: On The Road To The New York State Title

By Robert Brizel, Head RCM Boxing Correspondent

Rising New York City area heavyweight prospect Jarrell ‘Big Baby’ Miller, now 8-0-1 with eight knockouts, will fight the preliminary bout to the WBC main event on promoter Dmitriy Salita’s latest Brooklyn Brawl boxing card at the Brighton Beach Millenium Theatre on May 15, 2014. Miller was originally supposed to face Vincent Thompson. However, Thompson got arrested in the State of Washington recently as part of the bank robbery ring known as the ‘Buddy Bandits’. Thompson, charged in six bank robberies, is being held on one million dollars bail. Miller will now face new opponent Josh Harris

Real Combat Media: How has your training camp been going?”

Jarrell Miller: “Training has been good.”

Real Combat Media: Did the arrest of your scheduled opponent, Vincent Thompson, shock you? Real Combat Media covered his recent 10 round bout in Pennsylvania with Travis Kauffman.”

Jarrell Miller: “Yeah, it shocked me, but you’ve got to keep on training, it is what it is. Dmitriy (Salita) got me a new opponent, Josh Harris.”

Real Combat Media: “What’s the scouting report on Harris?”

Jarrell Miller: “Harris is a small guy with big hands. I’m not looking past him. I’m training hard. I’m gonna knock him out.”

Real Combat Media: “You have fought in Webster Hall, a larger ring, and Millenium Theatre, a small ring, on Dmitriy Salita’s shows. Does the size of the boxing ring make a significant difference for a heavyweight?”

Jarrell Miller: “The smaller the ring, the better (for me). I come forward the whole time.”

Real Combat Media: “Fellow Salita stable mate Stivens Bujaj is fighting for a World Boxing Council regional belt in the main event on the Brighton Beach card. Would you like to fight for a WBC regional belt as well? Are you ready to fight a 10 rounder?”

Jarrell Miller: “I would like to fight for a WBC regional belt in a couple of fights. I’ll sit down with my trainer and my team (and go over the options). In a few fights, I will up the distance to 10 rounders.”

Real Combat Media: “Are you interested in fighting some of the bigger name heavyweights in New York City? Say, Tor Hamer or Joe Hanks?”

Jarrell Miller: “I know Tor. Joe Hanks I know nothing about. I’ll fight anybody. Give me the fight, I’ll take it.”

Real Combat Media: “Do you like fighting for Dmitriy Salita in New York City?”

Jarrell Miller: “I like working with Salita, I went to camp with Dmitriy in the amateurs. I have worked with Dmitriy for a couple of years. Dmitriy is an excellent promoter, and he knows what he’s doing. I work hard, and everyone (on my team) does their part. You have to be lucky enough to have the right promoter, who fights you regularly and moves you in the right way. I’m lucky to be with Dmitriy. There are unfortunately a lot of jerky promoters out there who are killing the sport.”

Real Combat Media: “Tell me about Vitali and WladimirKlitschko. Wladimir is still boxing. Any serious chance you can get a shot at his world title in a year or two?”

Jarrell Miller: “The Klitschkos milked the heavyweight division, and do what they want to do. They ought to stop doing as they are doing, as they areruining the sport. You’ve got to take your hat off to them (for their accomplishments). It is what it is. I want to get my world title shot.”

Real Combat Media: “Who would you like to fight in 2015?”

Jarrell Miller: “A couple of gatekeepers. Travis Walker, and then Chris Arreola are two big names I would like to fight next year. Arreola might have a share of the world title by then if he wins the rematch for the vacant WBC world title with Bermane Stiverne in Los Angeles on May 10. Dmitriy’s got connections with the WBC so it’s possible. The WBC International heavyweight title, which Arreola won when he knocked out Seth Mitchell last September, will become vacant if Arreola beats Stiverne.

Real Combat Media: “Is that the same belt your stablemate Steve Bujaj is fighting for?”

Jarrell Miller: “Steve is cruiserweight, I am heavyweight. Dmitriy has Steve Bujaj fighting for the WBC International Cruiserweight title on the next card, so maybe I can get a shot WBC International heavyweight belt too if it becomes available. Travis Walker could be my opponent for the vacant WBC International Heavyweight title.”

Real Combat Media: “What about the vacant New York State Heavyweight title?”

Jarrell Miller: “That will be in my next fight, maybe against Derric Rossy. Steve just won the New York State Cruiserweight title, and now he’s fighting for the WBC International title at cruiserweight, so I’m following his lead at heavyweight, Dmitriy will make it happen.”

Real Combat Media: “A World Boxing Council belt brings with it a world rating, and a chance to fight the fighters at the top. Their names include KubratPulev, Bryan Jennings, Mike Perez, Chris Arreola, VyacheslavGlaskov, Tomasz Adamek, Robert Helenius, Tyson Fury, Dereck Chisora, David Haye, and Deontay Wilder. Jennings is fighting Perez next.”

Jarrell Miller: “Bryant Jennings is a hard worker in great condition. Deontay Wilder (the 2008 Olympic Bronze medalist) is who I would want to fight! I would be excited for that matchup! For sure that would be a great, deep fight for a world title belt. Wilder is a tall, lanky guy. I’m bigger than Holyfield, though. I can beat Wilder. Yesterday, Wilder, the WBC’s number three heavyweight contender was calling out WladimirKlitschko (who just beat Alex Leapai) for a world title bout, so it looks like that might be Wilder’s next fight.”

Real Combat Media: “Are you doing anything new in your training regimen?”

Jarrell Miller: “My conditioning includes more plyometrics, explosive drills, agility, ladder work, and short burst exercises for explosiveness.”

Real Combat Media: How focused are you towards winning the world heavyweight title?”

Jarrell Miller: “I’m all business. I want to improve. I work harder every day, so I am always getting better, so I can get my opponents out of there faster. It’s all hard work. Training hard, boxing card, and nothing else.”
