Tremendous Victory! Luis Collazo Knocks Out Victor Ortiz at 2:59 of The Second, Retains WBA International Title and Calls Out Floyd

Brooklyn, NY (January 31st, 2014)– Luis Collazo of Queens, New York, retained the World Boxing Association International Welterweight title with a second round knockout of ‘vicious’ Victor Ortiz in the main event at Barclays Center on Thursday night, January 30, 2014. The southpaw Ortiz, now 29-5-2 with 22 knockouts, Oxnard, California, got stopped for the third consecutive time. His career as a world class fighter is probably over.
Collazo, also a southpaw, now 35-5 with 18 knockouts, banked on Ortiz being able to come back after 19 months of inactivity and a broken jaw in the ring. Ortiz came out over aggressively, and just did land a few more blows to win an extremely close first round, but he was swinging wide and leaving himself open to attack. As Manny Pacquiao was when he wound up out of position and got knocked out by Juan Manuel Marquez, Ortiz missed with a left hook, and got tagged by a right hook squarely on the jaw. Ortiz spun with his back to Collazo, his legs went, and sunk helplessly to his knees with his head through the ropes, where referee Benji Esteves Jr. counted him out at 2:59 of round two.
The CompuBox statistics were a near dead heat. The counter power shot thrown by Collazo was the difference. Ortiz landed 30 of 100 punches for a 30% ratio. Collazo landed 31 of 108 punches for a 31% ratio. Collazo was believed not to have anywhere near the punching power of Ortiz, but as it turns out he was the more powerful fighter, catching Ortiz by surprise with the power which knocked Ortiz out.
After the bout, Luis Collazo talked about Ortiz, and called out Floyd Mayweather Jr. to fight him after Amir Khan later in 2014. “I knew he (Ortiz) was aggressive (but) he was wide open. I want (Floyd Mayweather Jr.) here in New York at Barclay’s Center. Floyd, if you are watching let’s make it happen!”
Result: Luis Collazo TKO 2 Victor Ortiz, Welterweights
