Happy Birthday Sylvester Jones Interview: Mastermind of In The Ring Entertainment

By Robert Brizel, Head RCM Boxing Correspondent

Boxing writer Sylvester ‘Sly’ Jones in the mastermind behind in the Ring Entertainment, a well-known boxing website offering news, views, blogs and contacts in the fight game. Currently the boxing website operated by Jones is being revamped with a new look for several weeks. Currently down, the website will be back up on the internet shortly in its new and improved format at http://www.intheringentetainment.net with a ‘Members Only’ feature controlling access to part of the site. Boxing news will be free on the revised site. Jones was not injured in a recent car accident involving his Lincoln Town Car in the Canarsie section of Brooklyn, New York, on 102nd Street in front of the Canarsie Post Office.

Real Combat Media: “Sly, when was your car accident.”

Sylvester Jones: “Before Christmas.”

Real Combat Media: “What exactly happened?”

Sylvester Jones: “I was driving my car, and I was doing about 50 (miles per hour), then I heard some rattling, then I started to slow down and tried to pull over. Then the next thing I know my (steering) wheel just rattled off!”

Real Combat Media: “Were you able to brake? Did the car come to a full stop?”

Sylvester Jones: “Yes (I was able to brake). The car skidded. I’m lucky I’m not dead or injured. The car was towed by the city. I was calling my insurance company, and they did not send me a tow. It was very cold that night, and all I had on was a hoodie, so I had to leave. I knew my car was going to get towed because it was (wound up broken down ) right in front of the U.S. Post Office.”

Real Combat Media: “What’s happening with In The Ring Entertainment, your boxing site?”

Sylvester Jones: “I’m making some improvements to the site. I’m adding on some things that will help a lot of different people in the boxing industry. Boxing fans will find out more shortly. The site will be back up later this week. They always say a champion is known not by the number of fights he’s won, but by the number of falls he takes when he can get back up.”

Real Combat Media: “What’s next on the Sylvester Jones agenda?” Sylvester Jones: “Thanks to the help of promoters Felipe Gomez and Ronson Frank, who have made a big difference in my corner, my boxing site will be back! When In The Ring Entertainment is back online, I will be looking to make money the first year with all the stuff I will have on my site online. As far as making matches, fight cards, helping people get next to matchmakers and promoters and managers and fighters and trainers, if it’s got something to do with boxing, you name it, I’m gonna have my hands in it.”

Real Combat Media: Lately you’ve been working with light heavyweight contender and boxing promoter Ronson Frank.”

Sylvester Jones: “I’m a part of the Uprising Promotions company team. I have been busy all this week assisting in the Uprising Promotions boxing card being held on Saturday, January 18,. 2014, at Five Star Banquet Hall in Long Island City, Queens, New York. Ronson Frank and Uthant Frank will be promoting an exciting ten bout card of professional boxing which will include two sanctioned WIBA and UBF International women’s title fights which have been approved by the New York State Athletic Commission. The main event is a ten round Flyweight title bout between Keisher McLeod Wells of Brooklyn and Monica Flores of Galveston, Texas.  I think it will be a great main event fight, and the reason I say this because the women have been putting on great fights on Ronson’s shows. The women have really been trying to prove themselves. Keisher Wells has beaten a number of unbeaten fighters in recent years, she’s on the way up. I think she’s affiliated with Lou DiBella, she’s already fought on five of his cards.”

Real Combat Media: “Thanks to the support of people of in the boxing world now, you are driving a van.”

Sylvester Jones: “I help out with transporting fighters from the airport to their hotel, and taking fighters to their medical examinations, and in setting up the venue before the boxing card. A full month of hard work is required as far as making sure we have a good card, with decent fights, and to have the right fighters for the card, to make people want to come back and see it again and again.”

Real Combat Media: Your 46th birthday is on January 17, 2014. The boxing card you are working to put together in on January 18th. Happy birthday Sly! How will you celebrate after the boxing card is over?”

Sylvester Jones: “After the fight card, I’m thinking about going out and celebrate my birthday. I’ll go out with a couple of the fighters and friends and boxing fans we are with to Dave & Busters Restaurant (Bar and Arcade) on 42nd street in Manhattan to have a good time. They’re open till 2 A.M. I figure we’ll have a few drinks, play a few games, have something to eat, after that take a couple of pictures. A few of the fighters coming in, they’ve either never been to New York City or they’ve never toured it before, so I might as well go out with them and have a good time!”

Real Combat Media: “So you are not looking to get any sleep Saturday night when you celebrate your birthday?”

Sylvester Jones: “Not at all!”
