Frank Mir vs. Josh “The Warmaster” Barnett
By Jared Merkley, Real Combat Media MMA Correspondent
Milwaukee, WI (August 27th, 2013)–On August 31st, we’ll see two UFC veteran Heavyweights square off in Milwaukee, WI at UFC 164 as Frank Mir (16-7) takes on Josh Barnett (32-6) in the octagon. Both fighters plan on working their way back up the ladder to the championship and to show the world who’s the better fighter. Both Mir, and Barnett held the UFC Heavyweight title at one point, and are some of the most well known fighters in MMA history, for both are also expert submission artists.
Frank Mir, 34, is looking to capitalize on this fight, as he should, coming off of a 2 fight losing streak from the likes of Daniel Cormier and Junior Dos Santos. Lets not forget though, Mir is by many dubbed the best heavyweight submission artist in the world and an elite striker. He holds 9 submission victories in the UFC, to go with his Black Belt in BJJ. He also has a black belt in Kempo. You can never count out a fighter, especially one like Mir.
After being released from the UFC in 2003 for testing positive for banned substances, Barnett is making a huge return to the UFC to fight Mir. Barnett, an honorary Black Belt in BJJ is also a world renown submission artist with an outstanding 19 victories of his 32 were via submission. After his release in 2003 he’s fought top competitors in organizations such as Pride, and Strikeforce. He is ranked number 9 Heavyweight of all time by Sherdog and with a comeback to the UFC, it seems he’s looking to boost that number with a victory over Frank Mir, the number 7 ranked contender by Sherdog.
All in all this will be a great decider on the best heavyweight submission artist in the world today. They both have exceptional stand-up as well. This fight should be a classic, and thought it’s hard to have a solid opinion on who’s going to take this one, I’m going to put my money on “The Warmaster” Josh Barnett. He’s got an outstanding record against great opponents and is very well versed. This is only one of the many great fights on the stacked card of UFC 164: Pettis vs. Henderson. Tune in on PPV August, 31st, 2013.
