Chad “Money” Mendes vs. Clay “The Carpenter” Guida
By Jared Merkley, Real Combat Media MMA Correspondent
Milwaukee, Wi (August 27th, 2013)– On August 31st, two top 10 ranked featherweights go at it as Chad “Money” Mendes (14-1) takes on Clay “The Carpenter” Guida (30-10) at UFC 164: Pettis vs. Henderson in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Both of these fighters are outstanding wrestlers with great stand-up games as well. This fight is extremely vital to the both of these featherweights in different ways.
Guida, 31, is ranked number 9 by the UFC of the top 10 featherweights and needs to win this fight in order to move up to title contention. What better way to do that than by taking on the current number 1 contender, Chad Mendes? By winning this fight, Guida can really show he still is a reputable contender for the title and that he can never be counted out. “The Carpenter” has arguably the best cardio in the sport, with relentless pressure throughout the entire fight. Chad Mendes better prepare for this fight, for Guida may be one of his toughest opponents to date.
Top contender, Mendes, 28, needs to prove that he’s also evolved his game to take on Clay Guida and move on to fight the UFC Featherweight champion, Jose Aldo. Aldo and Mendes have recently had a bout, which ended in Chad “Money” Mendes to lose his first fight. From what I’ve seen multiple times in the UFC or any other combat sport for that matter, losing could have been exactly what Mendes has needed to improve. This evidence is backed by the fact that his last 4 fights ended early due to TKOs and KOs. Guida’s chin will certainly be tested by the heavy-hitting Chad Mendes.
In my personal opinion, this will be a war until the very end due to their cardio, wrestling, and agression. If I were asked to state my opinion in the matter, I’d ultimately give the edge to Chad “Money” Mendes though. Like I’d stated earlier, you can never count out “The Carpenter”. Be sure to tune in to UFC 164: Pettis vs. Henderson on August 31st from Milwaukee, WI.
