Banks Busts His Thumb, Seth Mitchell Rematch Cancelled

New York, NY (February 7th, 2013)–Golden Boy Promotions quick turnaround rematch scheduled between heavyweight contenders Johnathon Banks and Seth Mitchell at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City for February 16, 2013, has been cancelled. Banks busted his right thumb in sparring Tuesday. With Banks sidelined for six to eight weeks for recuperation and healing, the bout for the WBC International and WBO NABO heavyweight titles could be rescheduled in the future.
Adrien Broner is set to defend his lightweight title for the first time against Gavin Rees of Wales in the main event on the February 16 televised HBO card. Currently under consideration is a proposal to add one of the undercard fights to the Home Box Office broadcast, which include: a super middleweight title elimination bout between Sakio Bika of Cameroon and Nikola Sjekloca of Montenegro for a shot at the World Boxing Association and World Boxing Council Super Middleweight champion Andre Ward; a United States Boxing Association 12 round light middleweight title bout between Demetrius Hopkins and Charles Whittaker; and a ten rounder between super featherweights Vincente Escobedo and Edner Cherry.
