Shock The Monkey! Peter Manfredo Will Kayo Joe Spina in Rematch
By Robert Brizel, Real Combat Media Correspondent
In an upcoming March 15, 2013 bout between two fighters promoted by Jimmy Burchfield Sr.’s CES Boxing, former North American Boxing Federation Middleweight and Super Middleweight champion Peter Manfredo Jr., 32, ‘The Pride of Providence’, will almost certainly knock out Joey Spina, also from Providence, Rhode Island, at 35 a loser of his last two bouts. Most likely Manfredo will end Spina’s career.
Spina, 26-3-2 with 18 knockouts, has fought his career between 166 and 180 pounds, and was 4-0-1 in United States WBC USNBC title bouts in 2005 and 2006. He was stopped in the third round by Manfredo in their first meeting at the Dunkin Donuts Center in Providence in October 2006 his first loss as a professional. Manfredo, 5’10” to Spina’s 6’2″, successfully got inside on the taller Spina, and with his power right hands getting through, staggering him before knocking him down and out.
Manfredo, 38-7 with 20 knockouts, is a harder hitter with a more solid resume of ring experience. he was stopped in the third round twice, by WBO Super Middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe and Sakio Bika, and was outpointed by former super middleweight champion Jeff Lacy. Since the Biko bout in 2008, Manfredo has won 7 of his last 8 bouts, losing only to 43-0-1 Julio Cesar Chavez in a World Boxing Council Middleweight title bout in 2011. In November 2012, Manfredo won a convincing ten round decision over veteran Rayco Saunders.
In May 2004, Manfredo won a 12 round decision to retain the WBO NABO light middleweight title over Anthony Bonsante, who had beaten Tony Ayala Jr. Manfredo is a 21 round fighter, Spina is not. Spina is 4–2-2 in bouts lasting eight rounds or more. In his last two eight rounders, Spina lost to 20-5 Jerson Ravelo and 12-1-1 Vladine Biosse, good light heavyweight for sure but not in the same class as Manfredo. To win, Spina would have to be able to outpoint Manfredo over 12 rounds.
Manfredo will come forward with pressure and look to land left and right hand power shots to the body on Spina, and hook him and uppercut him on the inside to break down Spina’s defenses. The overhand right, which worked for him in the first fight seven years ago, will finish Spina between the fifth and tenth rounds. Manfredo may not be as fast as he was in 2006 with Spina, but he will get there. Spina will not be able to hold forever with Manfredo’s right hand power shots comeing in, and though Spin a has a good jab he will eventually came into the pressure from Manfredo’s power shots.
Manfredo may not be Carl Froch or Joe Calzaghe, but he beat Spina the first time, and Spina is a faded fighter now who cannot win an eight rounder, and probably will not win more than a round or two against Manfredo while this bout lasts, which based on Spina’s recent outings, won’t be very long with Manfredo.
