Why Pacman Pacquiao Lost to Marquez: Post Fight IV Review

By Robert Brizel, Real Combat Media Correspondent

New York, NY (December 13th, 2012)– Juan Manuel Marquez beat Manny ‘Pacman’ Pacquiao because Pacquiao went all out for a knockout. That is the wrong thing Pacquiao did. If Paquiao had just boxed Marquez in their fourth confrontation, Pacquiao would have outboxed Marquez and won by 12 round decision and would have gotten another win.

There is nothing more dangerous than a wounded dog. Marquez was hurt the moment Pacquiao hit him and drove him into the ropes in round six. At that moment, Pacquiao decided go for the knockout, and was going in for the kill. In doing so, Pacman left him self wide open for the counterpunch, exposed for Marquez, the wounded dog best known for his counterpunching abilities.

Marquez could not have timed the knockout blow more perfect than he did. Marquez dumped Pacquiao’s unconscious head almost into God’s hands, the lap of Top Rank promoter Bob Arum.

To assume the mantel accompanying the title of World Boxing council ‘Fighter of the Decade’, Pacquiao had to demonstrate the abilities and instincts of the smarter fighter. Instead, in an instant of time, Pacquiao decided to live dangerously.

All of the fans in Mandalay Bay Casino in Las Vegas, or in their homes or bars or nightclubs or boxing gyms, were in love with ‘Pacman’ at the time Pacman got knocked out, saying he was unbeatable, the best fighter, that Floyd Mayweather Jr. was afraid to fight him. Of these diehard Pacman fans, nobody still can visualize Floyd can destroy Pacman, because Pacman’s style is tailor made for Floyd.

When you fight Pacman, it is not just about being in good shape, it’s kill or be killed, having the heart and knowing you are going to die. It’s a duel to the death, to see who’s quick enough.

Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s fight plan is at a higher level stakes than Pacquiao, in a whole different dimension. When you fight Floyd Mayweather Jr., beyond physical conditioning, it’s about who’s mentally the strongest, and who’s going to win the middle game. Fighting Floyd is a chess game. Floyd is a great fighter. Pacman lovers have forgotten Manny Pacquiao has been knocked out cold three times in his career.

People also forget Manny Pacquiao got his nickname of ‘Pacman’ from Juan Manuel Marquez himself. It was Marquez who made Pacquiao a star on HBO when they fought in 2004, when Marquez got knocked down three times in the first round, and eventually had to settle for a 12 round draw. Marquez wanted to fight Pacquiao after Pacman moved up in weight from super bantamweight champion to featherweight and stopped Marco Antonio Barrera in eleven rounds.

Pacquiao versus Marquez has all the characteristics of a great rivalry in the annals of boxing history if there ever was one, and God willing (as in Bob Arum) may trigger an unprecedented insane fifth match up for the fans and the bookies.

Pacquiao-Marquez is up there in the great rivalries of history, with Joe Frazier versus Muhammad Ali, Jack Dempsey versus Gene Tunney, Sugar Ray Robinson versus Jake LaMotta, Sugar Ray Leonard versus Thomas Hitman Hearns, Mike Tyson versus Donavan Razor Ruddock, Evander Holyfield versus Riddick Bowe, Jersey Joe Walcott versus Joe Lewis, Riddick Bowe versus Andrew Golota, Rocky Marciano versus Ezzard Charles, Floyd Patterson versus Ingemar Johansson, Cassius Clay versus Sonny Liston, and Arturo Gatti versus Mickey Ward.

People love Manny Pacman Pacquiao for many reasons, but for most the primary reason is when you watch Pacman fight, you are going to see is a man throwing punches who is fighting to die. Manny Pacquiao is not going to sit back and throw combinations. Manny Pacquiao is NOT a fighter you study for style. Manny Pacquiao is (in the rawest sense of accurate description) a wild fighter.

Pacquiao versus Marquez is the Home Box Office television successor to Arturo Gatti versus Mickey Ward, whereby you are seeing a horror story of two people punching each other in the face, broken bones, the possibility of blood all over the place, exciting sports violence televised live which is so raw even people who don’t watch boxing want to tune in to the fight and check it out and see what’s going on.

He who lives by the sword, dies by the sword. If you live dangerously, as Hector Macho Camacho might tell you, you very well can die dangerously. If you drop your guard for a moment, or if you leave a hole in your defensive armor while engaged in battle for even a split second, as Jack Johnson might tell you, you will see the sun.

And when the lights spin, and the alligators float on by, you might get surrounded by Blinky, Inky, Pinky and Clyde and get eaten. And so Pacman was. Game over.
