Hebrew Hammer

Mark Weinman’s Unlikely Comeback at Age 50

By Robert Brizel, Real Combat Media Correspondent

Whitestone, NY (December 20, 2012)– Now hailing from Whitestone, Queens, New York, here is Mark Weinman, The Hebrew Hammer. With 21 years between pro bouts, such a comeback attempt would seem highly unlikely.

Florida relicensed Weinman and sanctioned his comeback.

Here it is on BoxRec. http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=22731&cat=box

After Mike Rossman, no Jewish boxer is better remembered more recently than light middleweight Mark Weinman, AKA the ‘Hebrew Hammer’.  In boxing, like life, it can be to thine own self be true…….sometimes. Between 1985 and 1987, young Mark Weinman won his first eleven consecutive bouts. Then in 1987 he was stopped in the seventh round by Warren Williams at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, and stopped again in the eighth round by Warren Nelson at the Felt Forum in New York City. The Hebrew Hammer attempted a comeback in December 1991, by was stopped in the fourth round by Kelvin Prather. A comeback 21 years later would seem to be a stretch of the imagination-though clearly not completely impossible.

Heavyweight contender Mitch ‘Blood’ Green did it in New York City at age 48 in 2005. Former lightweight contender Kenny Lane did it at 50 in Michigan in 1982.

The late Jerry Quarry, emulating Big George Foreman, tried it at age 48 but lost a six rounder to Ron Cranmer in Aurora, Colorado in 1992. Quarry died in 1999, but he had his chance, whatever that means. Thomas ‘Hitman’ Hearns stopped Shannon Landberg in the tenth round in Auburn   Hills, Michigan at 47 in 2006. And so on.

Long a well-known boxing trainer, Weinman remained in boxing shape and active sparring and ever looked his age. So he figured at age 50-why not throw his hat in the ring and try again? Hebrew Hammer versus Floyd Mayweather Jr.? Miguel Cotto? Austin Trout? Canelo Alvarez? Alfredo Angulo? Vanes Martirosyan? Erislandy Lara? It will take several comeback bouts to determine if the Hebrew Hammer’s return is for real. Hopefully his opponents will be lesser level opposition.

On September 7, 2012, weighting 162 and 1/4 pounds, Hebrew Hammer stepped into the ring at the Doubletree Westshore Hotel in Tampa, Florida, against 36 year old Dominican fighter Elvis Martinez. Showing some of the old magic, Hebrew Hammer proceeded to turn back the clock and stop Martinez for a second round TKO in the scheduled six rounder, Hebrew Hammer’s tenth career knockout.

Well…………….maybe life in the ring sort of does begin again at 50, but I supposedit depends against who. Give The Hebrew Hammer an ‘A” for guts and courage, if nothing else. Everybody likes a winner. What else can be said. For now, It appears The Hebrew Hammer will continue his comeback campaign at Super Middleweight.

In the strange world of boxing, nothing seems impossible anymore. Mark Weinman AKA The Hebrew Hammer is back, ranked at number 116 in the United States, and number 526 in the world on BoxRec. Amen. Is Carl Froch next? Hopefully not.
