British Heavyweight Boxing Recap – Price V Fury?

By: Callum Meads

The British boxing scene witnessed what can only be described as an unsurprising, and slightly lackluster couple of nights. Although both David Price and Tyson Fury were victorious, neither of them was challenged and neither stole the show. You can say however, that this was mainly down to the opposition. Kevin Johnson made life extremely difficult for Fury by being his usual elusive and uninterested self. As was the case with Vitali Klitschko, Johnson was happy to ride out the loss on a points decision, as he proved to be extremely defensive minded and content to take a loss. Tyson Fury put on a display to match Vitali’s performance, as he went on to take a patient and tactically sound points decision, made easier by the Americans complete none effort. David Price was caught surprised in the opening seconds of his contest against the experienced Matt Skelton, as Skelton come flying out of the blocks, pinning Price up against the ropes and landing a clean right hand. However, it wasn’t long before it became clear David Price would be too much for the aging British heavyweight. Price began to land heavy punches and one clubbing punch to the body sent Skelton off on to the ropes and wide open to an onslaught of punches from Price. Skelton hit the canvas after a left hook to the liver and failed to beat the count in only the 2nd round.

Despite the two fights not providing top class entertainment, we can now see a clear path that leads to a Price v Fury contest. The two have history together, as they both competed on the amateur scene, with Fury famously knocking the Olympian out. I’m sure Price will be eager to shatter the torments of that loss and set the score straight. With Fury going from strength to strength however, that won’t be easy. The two fighters are beginning to peak and it’s only a matter of time before they must fight each other once again, this time, it will be for real. Right now, I’d give the edge to Fury, as I can’t quite remove the images of price being knocked out as an amateur from this equation. I feel that Fury will land on him and when he does, he will crumble. It’s up to Price to prove me wrong and show that he can be resilient against a giant heavyweight like Fury.
