Scott Harrison has been sentenced to 4 years in prison

Scottish former world champion Scott Harrison has been sentenced to four years in a Spanish prison following an assault at a brothel.
The incident occurred close to Malaga in 2007, where it is said Harrison assaulted three men. He received two, two-year sentences for two of the assaults and was ordered to pay a fine for the other.
The Scot only got out of a Spanish jail in September of last year after he served a 30 month prison sentence for an assault dating back to 2005 and this latest sentence will be a big blow to Harrison, who was hoping to recapture a world title in the future.
The 35 year-old from Bellshill held the WBO featherweight title between 2002 and 2006. He lost it to Manual Medina in 2003 but regained it in a rematch just three months later. He was then stripped of the title in 2006 after failing to attend a weigh-in for a defence against Nicky Cook.
By this time Harrison’s private life was spiralling out of control. He was treated for depression and alcoholism and was also in trouble with the law. His promoter, Frank Warren, famously said of the Glaswegian that ‘the only way Harrison would get help is if he was sectioned under the Mental Health Act.’
Harrison made his comeback to boxing earlier this year in June after nearly six and a half years out of the ring, this time looking for honours in the lightweight division.
He captured the International Masters title on his comeback after an impressive 4th round TKO victory over Gyorgy Mizsei Jr. Mizsei was down three times in the fight as Harrison showed that maybe he could still challenge for top honours.
He looked a lot less impressive in his last fight though on the undercard for Ricky Burns’ world title defence against Kevin Mitchell. He struggled but eventually beat Joe Elfidh on points and after said that he wanted to fight Ricky Burns for his world title.
Harrison has said he will appeal the sentence but has warned it could take over a year to be completed.
The sentence had cast doubt over his latest fight with John Simpson in Glasgow on December 1 but The Scot believes his appeal will mean the fight can still go ahead.
Either way it’s another big blow for the massively talented boxer whose out-of-ring antics have probably ruined his chances of being recognised as one of the greats in this sport.
