Gilbert Melendez Injured, Strikeforce Officially Cancels Entire Melendez vs. Healy Sacramento Card

By: Sensei Phillip Palmejar

With less than a month of time removed from the cancellation of UFC 151 due to Dan Henderson’s withdrawal after suffering a knee injury, Cesar Gracie lightweight Gilbert Melendez has officially pulled out of his main event fight against Pat Healy subsequently moving Strikeforce to cancel the entire event.  With only a handful of recognizable attractions on the card such as perennial contendor Josh Thomson, who was scheduled to fight Caros Fodor, or Mike Kyle, the heavy handed former UFC heavyweight, Scott Coker and the Strikeforce brass thought it better to scrap the card altogether rather than scurry to replace the headlining bout.

Melendez officially announced his injury via his personal Twitter page stating:

“Want to say sorry to all my fans and supporters of Strikeforce for not being able to compete,” following up with “Injured myself early last week. Bummer.”

Scott Coker, CEO of Strikeforce had this to say:

“When Showtime informed us that it would not be airing the event, we made the difficult decision to cancel Saturday’s card in Sacramento. Without a television partner, we simply could not move forward with this event. We wish Gilbert a speedy recovery and will work diligently and quickly to reschedule the fighters affected by this news on upcoming cards.”

It will be interesting in the days to come to witness the backlash of this cancellation in the wake of UFC 151.  Will the fighters all get rescheduled to another card, will they get their fight purses without actually having to fight, will Strikeforce damage their already strained relationship with Showtime?  Only time will tell at this point.
