Mikkel Kessler-Allen Green Preview
By: UK Writer Jon Campbell
Tomorrow on April 19th 2012 in Parken Stadium Denmark, the Danish 3-time Super-Middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler (44-2) faces off against top contender Allen Green (31-3) for the vacant WBC Silver Light-Heavyweight title. For both fighters this marks the comeback from a disappointing super six following their respected tune-up fights. Mikkel Kessler entered the super six as the joint favorite with Arthur Abraham on many of the cards. After a technical decision loss to eventual winner and now P4P star Andre Ward (25-0-0), Kessler came back with an impressive win against highly-rated Brit Carl Froch (28-2), only to have to drop out of the tournament and vacate his title with an eye injury. Allen Green has not necessarily been loyal to one particular weight-class, fighting at Middleweight, Super-Middleweight and Light-Heavyweight. In the Super-Six he had a difficult time against the upper-tier fighters, after replacing Jermain Taylor (30-4) for the second round he got beat decisively off Andre Ward and stopped by semi-finalist and respected journeyman Glen Johnson (51-16-2). Both fighters plan to overcome their setbacks at bring themselves to the very peak of the sport.
Of the two fighters it is clear to see Kessler is the fighter with the greatest resume and the most professional experience. He has won and defended titles and has been there and done it against top-level opposition. The only two losses are against undoubtedly exceptional fighters in Andre Ward and retired ring legend Joe Calzaghe (46-0) in their unification bout at the Millennium Stadium. Besides his most notable win over Froch Kessler has beat the likes of Andrade (30-4), Beyer (35-3-1) and Mundine (43-4). Not only this but he demonstrates good durability and all-round boxing skill, which I consider to be that of an a-level fighter. He shown his skill in the manner of which he gave Calzaghe problems and proving to be one of his more difficult opponents. Allen Green on the way up to the top-level has been a very exciting fighter, knocking out many in spectacular fashion. However, his resume is a bit thin and he has struggled to get a win yet against credible opposition on the international level. Despite this he should provide a reasonable math against Kessler and will bring the looming threat of a K.O in my opinion regardless of the fact Kessler is yet to be knocked out.
To conclude, my prediction for this fight is a Kessler win, either by a UD or a knockout through accumulation of punches. This fight should make for an interesting match as both fighters have something to prove and this is their chance to cement their futures in the sport. For Green this is an opportunity to get over the hump and begin to string together wins against the best fighters on offer. For Kessler, a way of firstly coming back from his unfortunate injury. Secondly, a way to establish himself at the Light-Heavyweight division in order to hopefully secure a title shot in his next fight and become a two-weight title holder.
