DAVID HAYE VS. DERECK CHISORA OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED FOR JULY 14TH
By: UK Boxing Writer Jai Singh
In an exciting turn of events for UK fans The Luxembourg Boxing Federation will license a heavyweight fight between David Haye (25-2, 23 KO’s) and Dereck Chisora (15-3, 9 KO’s) at Upton Park on July 14, it will be announced on Tuesday on Steve Bunces Boxing Hour in the UK.
The fight will be promoted by BoxNation in association with Sauerland.
Rumoured to also co-main event the bill will be Alexander Povetkin (24-0, 16 KO’s) vs. Hasim Rahman (50-7-2, 41. KO’s) in a WBA Heavyweight title fight. Which leads us to believe the winners of both Heavyweight contests will face off later in the year.
The British Boxing Board of Control will not sanction the fight after removing Chisora’s licence on March 14 and with Haye’s licence having lapsed.
This will be the first time that a bout will be held in Britain licensed by a foreign federation, something Robert Smith, secretary of the BBBC, said presented “a huge challenge to the board and everything we stand for”.
Federations are able to license bouts abroad because of free trade laws and the BBBC itself has put on shows in countries without a proper boxing commission like Malta.
Chisora’s licence was removed after he was cited for three counts of indiscipline for his brawl with fellow Londoner Haye at the post-fight press conference following his failed attempt to claim Vitali Klitschko’s world title in Munich.
A crowd of 40,000 is planned for the fight, the biggest in Britain since Ricky Hatton defeated Juan Lazcano in Manchester in front of 58,000 fans back in 2008.
