TYSON FURY VS. MARTIN ROGAN PREVIEW: THE BATTLE FOR IRISH SUPREMACY

This Saturday, April 14th rising heavyweight sensation Tyson Fury (17-0, 12 KO’s) takes on the inaugural Prizefighter winner Martin Rogan (14-2, 7 KO’s) in a battle for Irish heavyweight supremacy at the Odyssey Arena, Belfast.

Fury, the former British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion, vacated both belts after a title defence with David Price (12-0, 10 KO’s) fell through in February, is unbeaten in his professional career and is convinced after shedding a tremendous amount of excess weight that his new attitude to training has taken his standing in the sport to a new level.

Fury is hoping to improve on some recent rusty performances and is adamant that he will make light work of Martin Rogan by racking up a 13th win by knockout, going so far as to call Rogan ‘the bum of the month’ lined up for him to obliterate in quick and devastating fashion. “This has been a long time coming off”, Fury said. “This is my world title fight, the Irish heavyweight championship of the world. It couldn’t be any better. This is what it’s all about.” “He [Rogan] may be a great fighter but there’s a difference in great and supreme, world class and domestic. You’re talking, listening, to a world-class athlete.” “I’m going to hit Martin Rogan with that many left jabs he’s going to be begging for the right hand to come and knock him out. It’s going to be crazy.” “It doesn’t matter if he’s [Rogan] run 500 miles, if he’s trained with 14 armies, if he’s had a million sparring partners, it doesn’t matter if he’s got 16 hands. He can’t beat me.”

40 Year old Rogan, who is best known in Britain for upsetting Audley Harrison (27-5, 20 KO’s) in 2008 as well knocking out Matt Skelton (26-6, 21 KO’s) the following year, has seen his foe’s huge defensive flaws on display in his last two bouts and will be looking to capitalize with his rough brawling style. He also hit back with claims that Fury is overlooking the veteran Irishman by looking ahead at a potential showdown with world heavyweight champions, the Klitschko brothers soon.

“Fury is overlooking me once again,” Rogan added. “He thinks it is going to be an easy ride for him. It’s looks very much like he’s already looked past me. I haven’t looked past Saturday night. My eyes are firmly on taking him out and that’s what I’m going to do. I’m prepared to die in the ring.” “He’ll be thinking Martin’s over the hill, he’s been round the block, all this pantomime crap, but realistically come Saturday night at 10pm, there will be a pantomime, and it will be Tyson Fury running around the ring on his tip-toes away from me,” Rogan said, before warning Fury of the dangers of making plans before dealing with the tough task at hand.

The bout is for the vacant Irish heavyweight strap and should be another barnstormer on Channel 5, where Fury is fast becoming a household name has a following of around three million viewers. In the chief supporting bout, middleweight prospect & ‘Son of the Legend’ Chris Eubank Jnr. (2-0, 1KO) battles fellow undefeated prospect Paul Allison (5-0-1, 1 KO) in an intriguing match up.
