Juan Manuel Marquez vs.  Sergey Fedchenko – Rd by Rd

By: Boxing Writer Scott Canipe

Tonight in Mexico city, Juan Manuel Marquez, at age 38, will try and win the interim WBO  junior welterweight title, when he takes on Sergey Fedchenko who is 31.

Will Marquez, the cagey counterpunching veteran whose record is 53-6-1 (39 KOs) negate the efforts of the younger Fedchenko, 30-1 (13 Kos), who is a very technical and alert fighter?

Let’s get ready to rumble!

Rd 1– Both fighters are looking to measure each other.  Fedchenko is cautious and Marquez looking to figure out his style. Ohhhh! Marquez walks into a RIGHT hand! Marquez is firing back! Left hook to the body by Marquez at the end round!

Rd 2– Fedchenko is a very good technical European fighter .  Marquez looks so much bigger than Fedchenko.  Marquez is sporting a very muscular look.  Shotgun jabs by both fighters. Fedchenko is catching Marquez.  Even round!

Rd 3– Marquez is fighting in his hometown and he’s antsy to put on a great show.  Double jabs by Marquez followed by right-hand.  Marquez throws a jab followed by the left upper cut.  Nice combination by Marquez.  I am amazed by the body of Marquez, he clearly has engaged in strength training. Fedchenko is throwing but continues to miss and Marquez is more accurate. Nice right hand by Fedchenko, but Marquez answers back with a great combination.
Rd 4– Marquez feels so secure at this point and realizes that Fedchenko cannot do anything to thwart his offensive attack. Marquez is a tremendous counterpuncher but in this fight he is displaying great leading skills. Good right hand by Fedchenko and it catches Marquez offguard.

Fedchenko has got to do something to get back in this fight.  Marquez is clearly winning and he is the hometown favorite. Wow! Marquez threw a left jab followed by a left hook to the body and immediately followed with a left uppercut within a split second! Marquez is totally outclassing this guy! A stoppage could be inevitable.
Rd 5– From a physical standpoint, this is the best that Marquez has ever looked regarding his body composition.  With all of these muscles that he has added, he has not lost his speed and it appears he has actually increased his power.  Pace is slowing, somewhat. But then it picks back up toward the end of the round!! Nice exchanges!

Rd 6 – Fedchenko must do something to get back into this fight. OOHH! He caught Marquez with solid right hand, Marquez winces.  Nice right hook to the body by Juan Manuel Marquez at the sound of the bell!

Rd 7 – Marquez looks his best when someone comes straightforward like a Manny Pacquiao or Juan Diaz. Tonight, he initiates the action which is not his forte, however he’s doing quite well.  Nice right hook to the body by Marquez. Fedchenko just does not have the power to fend off Marquez.

Rd 8 – Fedchenko is withstanding these shots, but he is clearly being outclassed by the cagey veteran.  Nice exchange, both man lands. Fedchenko throws a double jab followed by a straight right hand that catches Marquez’s attention.  Marquez looking to assert himself.  Marquez throws a shotgun jab, but he gets caught by Fedchenko’s power jab as he is coming in at the sound of the bell.

Rd 9 – Fedchenko keeps trying to come back, because he realizes that he is losing this fight.  But Marquez, at this point has it in the bag.  Not too much going on in this round. Nice exchange at the end of the bell!

Rd 10 – Nice jab by Fedchenko. Fedchenko could box when he moves side to side and throws shots, but he will not commit to taking risks. Ohhh nice left hook by Marquez.  Now they are exchanging with 20 seconds to go in the round! Nice action.
Rd 11 – Not a lot of action. Marquez won it though.

Rd 12 – Both men are coming out looking to make a statement.  Marquez is clearly getting the better of it! In the middle of the round Marquez is really pouring it all on and Fedchenko is holding.  Marquez truly wants it and is giving it his all. Wow! Excellent exchanges! Fedchenko just doesn’t have the power to fend off the attack of Juan Manuel Marquez.

The judges scores are in: Marquez won it by a landslide!!!

Marquez is looking for the fourth fight with Manny Pacquiao.  First of all Manny has to get by Timothy Bradley.  If Manny does and if he and Marquez makes the fourth fight it could be something very special. Hey, I would pay for it!
