Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Looks To Win Over Doubters As He Takes On Tough Contender Marco Antonio Rubio.

By: Jai Singh

On Saturday 4th February, the reigning WBC Middleweight ChampionJulio Cesar Chavez Jr. (44-0-1, 31 KO’s) defends his world title against fellow Mexican – Marco Antonio Rubio (53-5-1, 46 KO’s).
As the son of a famous boxing legend, Junior will probably never shake the shadow of his all-time-great father as a professional fighter – his surname will always be a double edged sword. He is often looked upon as a fighter that was given an ‘easy’ route to a world title, and although that may be somewhat true, Chavez Jr. has beaten credible opponents such as John Duddy, Sebastian Zbik and Peter Manfredo within the past couple of years.
Searching for the respect that has eluded him so far in his 45 fight professional career, Chavez will face his toughest challenge to date in the motivated, experienced and extremely heavy handed Marco Antonio Rubio at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. This fight has the all the ingredients to be an explosive brawl as both fighters fight at a fast pace and both can hit very hard.
Rubio comes into this fight with more losses but also more experience. He has gone 10-0 since October 2009 with nine of those wins coming by TKO/KO, most notably an upset KO victory over then highly touted French-Canadian banger David Lemieux (25-2, 25 KO’s). His last loss was against former world champion Kelly Pavlik in February 2009. He fought valiantly for nine rounds, but was unable to withstand the stronger and more accurate Pavlik and his corner stopped the fight after 9 hard fought rounds.
This weekend may prove Junior’s mettle. If he gets bombarded with haymakers early, will he cave and prove his critics right? If he has early success will he punch himself out and become a sitting duck in the late stages of the contest just as the undefeated knockout artist David Lemieux did in his losing effort against Rubio last year? We’ll find out this weekend.
Co-headlining the Top Rank card will be multi-time world champion Nonito Donaire (27-1, 18KOs) vs. Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. (21-1-1, 18KOs) in the junior featherweight division.
