Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (now 45-0-1, 31 KO’s) successfully retained his WBC middleweight title with a 12-round unanimous points decision over tough Mexican veteran Marco Antonio Rubio this past Saturday at the Alamodome, Texas.
With his father, Mexico boxing legend Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. ringside, the son of the legend took control of this bout early and pounded away with body shots in the middle rounds. Rubio (53-6-1, 46 KOs) threw 402 more punches than Chavez, but landed 36 less than the champion.
Neither fighter went down despite taking continuous heavy blows to the head and body throughout the 12-round bout.
Chavez, who hails from Culiacan, struggled to make weight for the championship bout and was arrested on drink driving charges on January 22 in Los Angeles.
The win was also slightly tainted in the eye’s of many as after the fight, Marco Antonio Rubio accused Chavez Jr. of using Performance Enhancing Drug’s as he managed to escape the arena without leaving behind a urine sample for mandatory commission drug testing.
The 25-year-old native of Culiacan, Mexico served a seven month suspension after testing positive for a banned substance following his 2009 victory over Troy Rowland. The young star tested positive for furosemide, a diuretic which is often used in desperate bids to make weight quickly. The substance, however can also been used as a masking agent to disguise the use of other banned substances in the past.
Marco Antonio Rubio and his handlers plan to file a formal protest regarding the issue.
