Jon Jones survived a very one sided first round and it appeared Machida was on his way to win this fight . Machida looked great in the first round and hit him with the hardest shots to ever hit Jones. Machida was very confident in his standup early on and went right after Jones and forced Jones to back off for most of the first round. Jones appeared hurt. . Machida dominated and outclassed Jones on his feet for the first round.
Machida came out looking good again and appearing even more confident on his feet and kept switching his stance to throw off Jones. He was defending Jones takedowns until he was took him down and Jones threw a viscous elbow causing the referee to send the doctor to examine the deep forehead wound that hurt and cutted Machida. The doctor cleared him to go on and Jones backed Machida into the cage to apply a viscous guillotine choke and Machida went unconscious for a few minutes. Machida woke up a couple of minutes later and was luckily ok . Jones stopped Machida at 4:26 of the second round.
Jon Jones retained his light heavyweight UFC championship.
It’s not really a move that I practice. I think it’s something that comes natural from wrestling for years. But yeah, it was a great lock. I realized that I had it, that I just needed to be tough and hold the position and eventually he’d run out.”
“He was definitely a very tough puzzle to solve,” Jones said.
In other UFC action, Tito Ortiz was dominated by Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and lost what looked to be a cracked rib. He was in a lot pain and he was getting pounded on the bottom position when Nogueira was hitting Ortiz from the ground and pound position. He hito Tito with too many shots and Ortiz was unable to defend forcing the referee to stop the fight. Tito Ortiz career is down to one last fight and has only one fight left on his contract.
Nogueira, who fended off an early attack from Ortiz, said, “I feel so great. It’s like a dream come true.”
Frank Mir overcame a very close KO from Minitauro Nigueira’s brother. Frank survived a horrible beating in the first round and was getting get nailed, while he was on the ground.
In the second round, Mir pulled off a bone snapping Kimura from side control to break Minitauro’s arm by a nice ground roll reversal. Mir now puts himself in a position to fight for the title shot again in 2012. Frank Mir has enjoyed a recent winning streak and is the only man to ever submit Brock Lesnar. A possible trilogy fight is a possibility in the future to face Lesnar.
“I was stunned,” Mir said. “He caught me.” “I’m the first person to knock him out and the first and only person to submit him,” Mir said. “I hope that Nogueira is OK. I idolize him.”
I feel Jon Jones overcame his first real test of adversity in his career tonight. Jon showed a lot of heart tonight and proved his critics wrong again. Machida out classed Jones on his feet, but Jones Greco Roman Wrestling style guillotine choke was locked it in too tight for Machida to escape. Jon may hold this UFC belt for a long time.
