Cincinnati, OH (February 19th, 2017)– What a great night of boxing! PBC put on a hell of an event at the Cintas Center in Cincinnati, OH. Saturday night! Adrien “The Problem” Broner (33-2, 24 Kos) won a highly controversial 10 round split decision against Adrian “Tigre” Granados (18-5-2, 12 KOs) on Saturday night on Showtime Championship Boxing at the Cintas Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. The judges scored the fight 97-93, 96-94 for Broner, and 97-93 for Granados. Had judge Robert Pope not given Broner the 10th round, the fight would have ended in a draw. I had Broner by one round.
According to CompuBox punch statistics, Broner, who earned $1 million, landed 166 of 403 punches (41 percent) while Granados connected on 146 of 683 blows (21 percent).
Granados (18-5-2, 12 KOs), who made a career-high $250,000, has been a hard-luck fighter. All five of his losses have been by either split or majority decision. He’d like a rematch.
“I knew it wouldn’t be a pretty fight, but I’m so thankful to my team,” Granados said. “Broner knows there were lots of games played leading up to this. I just want to be treated fairly. I know I don’t have a perfect record, but I can beat anybody. Let’s do it again. He fought smart and did his thing. If he thinks he did it this time, let’s do it again. I want it at my house (in Chicago).”
Broner mentioned that he hurt his left hand in the first round and could not use his jab after that. He threw mostly right uppercuts in the fight while trying to keep Granados pressure off him. Granados kept coming forward all night. Broner caught him with some clean hard punches but Granados took them in stride and kept moving forward! Don’t get me wrong Broner looked sharp for the most part, however Granados work rate was just overwhelming.
After the fight the fans booed Broner in his hometown. There seem to be a curve in his maturation process for the better. In his post-fight interview with Jim Gray Broner mentioned that he had to be a better role model for the kids that looked up to him! To me that was refreshing to hear coming from him! As for Granados we have to tip our hat off to the young man. He came to Broner’s hometown and agreed to all of the last minute changes leading up to the fight (the original date was November 11th and this was a scheduled lightweight fight that was fought at the welterweight limit). Granados requested an immediate rematch to be fought in his hometown Chicago but Broner rejected the offer!
