Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico (April 23, 2016)– Southpaw Amanda ‘The Real Deal’ Serrano, the WBO Female World Featherweight champion now signed with DiBella Entertainment, 27-1 with 20 knockouts, Brooklyn, New York, stopped 6-0 undefeated challenger Edina Kiss, a top ten world ranked female featherweight, in the fourth round at Cancha Ruben Zayas Montanez in Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico, on Friday, April 22, 2016. Now the World Boxing Organization World Female Featherweight champion, Amanda’s corner has long had trouble finding qualified opponents. Is there a serious challenger left for her WBO belt?
Well, this reporter has an answer. Here’s something new for Lou DiBella. How about Serrano versus 15-1 Ronica Jeffrey, Brooklyn, New York, who now holds the World Boxing Council Female Silver Featherweight title, as the next qualified challenger at Barclays Center for Serrano’s WBO Female World Featherweight title, in a WBO world title all-Brooklyn war? If Serrano can make the weight against at 126 pounds, this would be a great hometown bout which would both sell tickets and showcase the talents of both Brooklyn female fighters. Do the fight three minute rounds instead of two. Up the stakes.
Lou DiBella Entertainment must take note of Ronica Jeffrey, as Jeffrey holds a high level WBC female belt-and has earned the right to challenge Serrano in an all-Brooklyn war!
Both fighters own a win over Olivia Gerula. Serrano, 28-1-1 with 21 knockouts, holds a 75% knockout ratio in bouts which she wins. Jeffrey, 15-1-1 with one knockout, is a purely technical fighter, as 94% of her bouts go the distance. Serrano and Jeffrey have split results with Carla Torres. Jeffrey lost an eight round decision to Torres, who Serrano subsequently stopped in the first round, both in 2014. Jeffrey previously decisioned Torres in 2011. The question of power versus technical fighter will be in question. Jeffrey decisioned Gerula over 10 rounds, while Serrano stopped her in the first round. For the matchup to work, Jeffrey, who has superior height and reach advantage, has to outwork Serrano from the outside and keep a fast pace with superior hand speed and foot movement. Serrano has yet to face a taller, skinny, lanky opponent who could prove a confusing target in a lengthy technical war.
Jeffrey won the World Boxing Council Silver Female Featherweight title on April 16, 2016, by winning a 10 round decision on Gentiane Lupi at The Trust Arena in Auckland, New Zealand. This is a significant achievement, as it is known to be practically impossible for any foreign fighter to record a win by decision on New Zealand territory, where their fighters always get the decision no matter what, unless foreign boxers can knock them out.
Jeffrey has risen to the number six position in the worldwide female featherweight BoxRec rankings, a fact which Lou DiBella cannot ignore.
Jeffrey was rare to be a foreign fighter who has won in New Zealand. Four known rare exceptions occurred in regional title bouts involving American heavyweights. American heavyweight Monte Barrett achieved a 12 round decision win over David Tua in a WBO two title regional bout in New Zealand in August 2011, where Tua was fighting out of New Zealand even though he is from Tonga. American heavyweight Brian Minto stopped Shane Cameron of New Zealand in seven rounds in a WBO regional title bout in Auckland in December 2013. In February 2014, American heavyweight Bronco Billy Wright stopped Auckland’s Chauncey Welliver in the fifth round of a WBC triple regional belt fight. That Jeffrey won a WBC female regional title fight in New Zealand by defeating a New Zealand fighter in New Zealand is still most astounding. It can be said from the above title bouts perhaps get more serious consideration. For a foreign fighter to win a decision in New Zealand remains most unbelievable, based on New Zealand’s history of pro bouts there.
Serrano is predicted to win a 10 round decision over Jeffrey if she gets inside-but who knows? Jeffrey is taller, has a sharper jab, and faster footwork than Serrano. Jeffrey is a better fighter boxing from the outside than Serrano. Amanda Serrano must get inside on Ronica Jeffrey to defeat her. If an even Steven game plan to mix it up and try to outwork each other were to result, Jeffrey could outpoint Serrano over 10 rounds in a similar manner to Serrano’s 10 round decision loss to WBC world champion Frida Wallberg.
There is already in existence an established successful game plan by Wallberg to fight and beat Serrano, and Jeffrey might be the one to accomplish it again. In addition, Amanda Serrano’s bout with Jeffrey should be fought at 10 three minute rounds instead of two, as three minute female boxing has already taken place in New York State recently. This would be a real test to determine ‘who is the better fighter’ between Amanda Serrano and Ronica Jeffrey. This is because Jeffrey, unlike many of Serrano’s other opponents, is not a ‘stiff’. Instead of importing more target practice to the United States for Serrano, the best opponent for Serrano now is Jeffrey, who lives in the same town. For Lou DiBella, Serrano versus Jeffrey at Barclays Center will sell tickets and generate regional interest in female boxing. If it’s an all-Brooklyn war you want, with Serrano versus Jeffrey, you’ll get it.
