Leigh Wood Upsets Mauricio Lara
By DAZN Boxing
Manchester, UK (May 28th, 2023)– Leigh Wood was too good for Mauricio Lara. Leigh Wood is once again WBA featherweight champion following a disciplined display that saw him collect a well-deserved points win in Manchester.
Earlier this year, Lara travelled to Nottingham to dethrone Wood, but the Mexican lost his title at the fight’s weigh in when he arrived at the venue almost 4lbs overweight.
With the belt only the line for Wood, he made no mistake in his quest to reclaim it and he got his night off to a great start by dropping Lara in the second round.
A well-timed uppercut from Wood floored Lara and the shot gave Wood the platform to build a dominant lead just like he did in the original contest.
This time around, there was no comeback from Lara as he had no answer to the Wood’s superior skillset.
At the end of 12 one-sided rounds, Wood was declared the winner with scores in his favour of 118-109 x 2, and 116-111.
Wood is once again a target for the best names in his division.
Eddie Hearn and Leigh Wood have been issued a stern warning by the manager of Luis Alberto Lopez, who is eager to see his man face Wood next.
Kiki Magana had already overseen Lopez coming to Britain to taste success on two occasions prior to last night’s fight with Michael Conlan, and now it’s three after he stopped the Irishman in five rounds in front of a stunned Belfast crowd.
Shortly after in Manchester, Leigh Wood pulled off a big upset as he regained his WBA crown after outpointing Mauricio Lara just three months after the Mexican had stopped him.
With plenty of exciting fights available at featherweight, Magana is eager to see Lopez travel to Britain once more and aim to unify his IBF belt.
“Please go and tell him that he is next,” said Magana to Mirror Fighting when discussing Wood following Lopez’s win over Conlan.
“We’re about to call Eddie Hearn and tell him ‘If the money’s right we’ll come to London, and we’ll fight Leigh Wood’. It will be a full house.”
