Canelo Alvarez vs. Ryder, Martinez and Gvozdyk Return, DAZN Cinco de Mayo Preview

By Robert Brizel, Real Combat Media Head Boxing Correspondent

Guadalajara, Mexico (May 5th, 2023)– DAZN will present an exciting 10 bout card of boxing corresponding to the Mexican Cinco de Mayo festivities at Estadio Akron, Zapopan, Mexico, on Saturday night, May 6, 2023, featuring Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez defending the undisputed World Super Middleweight title against challenger John Ryder. Interim World Boxing Council World Super Middleweight champion David Benavidez hopes to fight the winner.

Alvarez, 58-2-2 with 39 knockouts, Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, is predicted to record his 40th career knockout by late round stoppage between rounds seven and nine against Ryder, 32-5 with 18 knockouts, Islington, London, United Kingdom. Ryder holds recent wins over the likes of Daniel Jacobs and Zach Parker, his best career victories to date. However, Ryder has lost to Billy Jo Saunders, Callum Smith and Rocky Fielding in his five losses, three opponents Canelo has beaten handily.

Alvarez currently dominates the super middleweight division, and is too fast, too accurate and too sharp at 168 pounds, and has superior ring generalship. Depending on how rapidly Canelo breaks Ryder down, a knockdown and the stoppage could happen a round or two earlier, depending on when Canelo wants to close the show, or if Ryder simply fights a survival type fight. Ryder is peaking, though, and might to try to battle it out with Canelo, making for an extremely exciting fighting going into the later rounds, for as long as it lasts.

In the undercard, Julio Cesar Martinez, 19-2 with 14 knockouts, Mexico City, Mexico, is predicted to win by 12 round unanimous decision in defense of his World Boxing Council World Flyweight title over Ronal Batista, 15-2 with nine knockouts, Panama City, Panama. Steve Spark, 16-2 with 14 knockouts, Toowoomba, is predicted to win by 12 round decision over Gabriel Gollaz Valenzuela, 26-3-1 with 16 knockouts, Guadalajara, Mexico, in defense of his World Boxing Association Inter-Continental Lightweight title. Spark holds a disqualification win over the previously undefeated Montana Love in his last bout.

Former World Boxing Council World Light Heavyweight champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk, 18-1 with 14 knockouts, Oxnard, California, in his second comeback bout, is predicted to win by 10 round unanimous decision over Ricards Bolotniks, 19-6 with eight knockouts, Riga, Latvia. Prospects Nathan Rodriguez, Bek Nurmaganbet, Lawrence King, Carlos Vazquez, Abilkan Amankul, Johansen Suarez, and Jesus Larios (pro debut opening the card) are all predicted to win on the untelevised undercard portion of the card.
