Las Vegas, NV (March 14th, 2023)–  With only 17 seconds from a clear unanimous decision victory, Raphael Assuncao’s bantamweight retirement bout at UFC Fight Night 221 Las Vegas live on ESPN+ The Theater at Virgin Hotel on March 11, 2023, ended in an unanticipated spoiler, when ‘Dangerous’ Davey Grant scored a spectacular and extraordinary extremely rare technical submission upset win by reverse inverted triangle choke from the bottom of the Octagon floor in the waning seconds of the third and final round at 4:43 of the third and final round.

Grant, 15-6 with four knockouts, Team Syndicate MMA, Bishop Auckland, England, lost the first two rounds to 38 bout UFC veteran Assuncao, 28-10 with four knockouts, Team Xtreme Couture, Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil, and Grant also had a point deduction for holding the fence.

Grant landed a spinning back fist in the waning seconds of the bout. Assuncao tried to recover with a takedown attempt. Grant took Assuncao’s back instead on the way down, and somehow locked into a rare inverted reverse triangle. Assuncao, pinned down, got locked into a bizarre inverted reverse triangle, forcing referee Keith Peterson to stop the match when Assuncao could not escape. Assuncao announced his retirement after the bout, marking the end of his 19 year MMA career.
