Eye of the Tiger Results From Montreal! Valenzuela TKOs Ulysses in 52 Seconds, Bazinyan Edges Fox
By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent
Montreal, Canada (February 4th, 2023)– In a one punch big shot early knockout upset, unheralded Gabriel Gollaz Valenzuela put himself solidly into the world lightweight rankings and title picture with a first round TKO of Yves Ulysses Jr., the first time in 25 pro bouts during his nine year pro career Ulysses had ever been off his feet in 25 pro bouts held in Canada and the United States.
A massive atom bomb power right uppercut Randall Bailey style by visiting Valenzuela, 26-3-1 with 16 knockouts, Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, dropped a shocked Ulysses, now 22-3 with 12 knockouts, Montreal, Canada, dazed to the canvas on all fours. Ulysses tried gamely to get up, and reached to his feet, but he was out, prompting referee Martin Forest to stop the bout 52 seconds in to prevent Ulysses form incurring further damage.
Much like Liam Smith’s recent destruction of Chris Eubank Jr., Valenzuela struck hard, but early and fast at Montreal Casino, Friday evening, February 2, 2023. Valenzuela, in his only appearance in Canada, drew with still undefeated 16-0-3 Canadian super welterweight Jessie Wilcox over eight rounds. In his only other fight outside of Mexico, Valenzuela, on May 5, 2022, lost a controversial 12 round decision to then 17-0-1 Montana Love at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The 114-112 scoring of the three judges suggested perhaps Valenzuela would have gotten the decision if the bout were held elsewhere. The combined records of the four opponents Valenzuela did not beat were 43-0-3 after he fought them and did not get the decision, suggesting Valenzuela was one class above Ulysses in level of opposition, and unlikely to leave any future bout to the scorecards at this point in his career.
Five of the six bouts on the Montreal card were KO or TKO stinkers which ended in three rounds or less. The preliminary bout to the main event was a 10 round decision titular thriller in which super middleweights Erik Bazinyan and Alantex Fox rocked the house.
