UFC 283: Jamahal Hill Favorite to Take Home Light Heavyweight Title

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (January 16th, 2023)– The first big overseas event of the UFC in 2023 is just around the corner. On the 21st of January, the world’s biggest fight promotion will head to Rio de Janeiro for 15 tantalizing mixed martial arts bouts. One of these is particularly enticing and sees Glover Teixeira go head to head with Jamahal Hill for the vacant UFC Light Heavyweight title. We look at the background of each fighter and break down why Jamahal Hill is the slight favorite heading into the bout.

Hill Looking to Ride Wave of Form to Title

Debuting as a professional in 2017, Jamahal Hill burst onto the professional mixed martial arts scene. It would be four years before the American tasted defeat, steamrolling through his first nine fights without losing. In fact, after only two years of fighting as a professional, Hill won the opportunity to fight in Dana White’s Contender Series in 2019. From here, Hill won a UFC contract, winning his debut against Darko Stosic.

After a slight hiccup in 2021 where Hill lost to Paul Craig due to an arm injury, the 31-year-old has continued his winning ways. Since his first career loss, Hill has won three in a row, with victories over Jimmy Crute, Johnny Walker, and Thiago Santos all by way of knockout in the past eighteen months. Now, heading into this title fight, Hill will be eager to ride this momentum and leverage his strong striking game to dominate Glover Teixeira to claim the light heavyweight belt.

Glover Eager to Use Experience to Claim Belt

For Glover Teixeira , it’s less about the Brazilian’s form in the UFC and more about his experience that he will be looking to leverage to claim a win here on the 21st of January. The 43-year-old will be fighting in front of a home crowd, against a fighter who has appeared in 29 fewer professional fights than he has.

Debuting more than two decades ago, Glover first fought as a professional in 2002. The Brazilian spent a decade making a name for himself on the domestic circuit, before getting called up to the UFC in 2012. Since then, he has accrued a record of 16-6-0 in the UFC, to go with his overall record of 33-8-0 as a professional fighter. Most recently Glover lost to Jiri Prochazka while fighting for the light heavyweight title—an opportunity that he got courtesy of an impressive win over Jan Blachowicz in UFC 267.

Youth and Form Holds Edge Over Experience at Home

This fight should be about as close as it gets in terms of UFC title fights. Looking at the odds offered by various betting sites found through betting.com/ufc-mma, we can see that Jamahal Hill has his nose in front, with most bookies putting this fight at -125 vs 100 in favor of Hill.

Bottom line is, this fight comes down to youth and forms, against experience and home advantage. Hill is riding a wave of good momentum and his one loss in the UFC showed how much heart he has. However, Hill knows this will be his last shot at a UFC title given his age and recent loss. How much will the old dog want it? We’ll see on January 21st.
