Camden, NJ (August 28th, 2022)– All sixteen scheduled fighters for the eight scheduled fights weighed in on Saturday, August 27, 2022, in Camden. New Jersey, for the Sunday, August 28, 2022 pro boxing card on the battleship New Jersey in Camden, New Jersey, promoted by Alex Barbosa’s R & B Promotions, his R & B Promotions inaugural card. Rising undefeated 8-0 Philadelphia prospect Tahmir Smalls is featured. The card will also be streamed live on bxngtv.com.
For boxer turned ring announcer, and now boxing promoter Alex Barbosa, the Battleship New Jersey card, which brings boxing back to Camden after several decades, is the natural transition and the third stage of the boxing career of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania’s Barbosa, which has been interesting and colorful, due to his unique transitional triple pathway to the new lane of promotional glory. Between 2011 and 2018, Barbosa, fighting between junior featherweight and junior lightweight, posted a professional record of 6-3-1 with one knockout. Barbosa stopped Brian Gonzales in two rounds at Harrah’s Casino in his 2011 pro debut, then figured into nine consecutive four round decisions. Barbosa, a hot and cold fighter, had different win, loss and draw results in his last six pro bouts, including a four round decision win over Sergio Aguilar at SugarHouse Casino in 2018.
Barbosa had by then already transitioned to ring announcer, and he has now taken his suit jacket and tie and winning smile to the third level, that of boxing promoter, with a second fight card planned this Fall at Showboat in Atlantic City.
Robert Brizel: “You have been the ring announcer at other shows. At your own?”
Alex Barbosa: “I won’t announce this show. I am the promoter.”
Robert Brizel: You aspired to be the champion of the world as a fighter. Any regrets?”
Alex Barbosa: Every fighter aspires to be the champion of the world. You get punched in the face. You aspire to take your fight career to the highest level you can.”
Robert Brizel: “As reporter, I had the privilege of being ringside for your career from the start. I saw you winning four rounds. You had not yet reached your potential for contender form.”
Alex Barbosa: “I was never a prospect (on the road for a world title, in that sense).”
Robert Brizel: “At some point, when and why did you aspire to become a ring announcer?”
Alex Barbosa: “I sustained a neck injury and other injuries. I wanted to stay connected to boxing (as my fighting career had wound down) so I became a ring announcer.”
Robert Brizel: “Where did the promotional element figure into play?”
Alex Barbosa: “I was doing amateur shows in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. At this point in my life, I have the right experience, and I am ready to promote professional boxing shows.”
Robert Brizel: “Best wishes for success in your Battleship card in Camden.”
Alex Barbosa: “It’s been 35 years since boxing has been in Camden. The COVID-19 regulations of the New Jersey Athletic Commission have been a hurdle, but that is just part of the challenge of the times we have to answer to make my inaugural promotional event a success.”
