WBC Champ Jermall Charlo Released From Texas Jail on $10,000 Bail on Assault Charge

Houston, TX (February 15th, 2022)– Four decades ago, the late Argentine World Middleweight champion Carlos Monzon fought on and defended his title, despite being shot twice by his wife in domestic incidents, but getting only one bullet removed. One current world middleweight champion of the several paper champions remains a figure of controversy. World Boxing Council World Middleweight champion Jermall “Hit Man” Charlo was released from Fort Bend County Jail in Texas, on Monday, February 14, 2022 following a modification of his bail bond. Charlo was formally arrested and booked February 11, 2022, on one count of third-degree felony assault, and remained in detention this weekend after arrest. A first court date to enter a plea has been set for March 28, 2022.
Charlo’s latest trouble with the law stems from an altercation with a family member allegedly took place this past Labor Day Weekend, on September 5, 2021, in Fort Bend County [according to a copy of publically available police records obtained by Boxing Scene].
Jermall Charlo, 32-0 with 22 knockouts, Houston, Texas, and his twin brother Jermell “Iron Man” Charlo, 34-1-1 with 18 knockouts, the reigning WBC, WBC and IBF World Super Welterweight champion are represented by Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions, which does not comment on the legal matters of its contracted boxers. Jermell Charlo will fight a rematch with WBO World Super Welterweight champion Brian Carlos Castano on March 19, 2022, at crypoto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California. Jermall Charlo last fought on June 19, 2021, retaining his WBC World Middleweight title at Toyota Center in Houston with a 12 round decision win over challenger Juan Macias Montiel.
Charlo, after having a previous conviction for family violence in Clark County, Nevada, was booked February 11, 2022, charged with Assault Causing Bodily Injury of a Family Member, a third-degree which carries a sentence of two to ten years in prison if Jermall Charlo found guilty. The arrest warrant was returned February 14, 2022, upon his release from jail. As the alleged incident in question took place during the COVID-19 Novel Coronavirus Pandemic, Charlo is automatically subject to enhanced punishment. The arrest affidavit noted the alleged incident was committed in an area that was, at the time of the offense, subject to a declaration of a state of disaster made by the President of the United States under the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act; or the Nevada governor; or the presiding office of the governing body of a political subdivision, or subject to an emergency evacuation order. The United States of America has remained caught in the Coronavirus Pandemic since March 2020. The distinction in the arrest affidavit means Charlo now faces to second-degree felony assault charges, which doubles the maximum sentence to up to 20 years in prison if he is found guilty.
Jermall Charlo’s latest arrest completely knocked him out of the box for a potential super fight with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez later in 2022. Canelo, who had considered fighting Jermall Charlo, will instead fight WBA World Light Heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol on May 7, 2022. If Canelo wins, he hopes for a third trilogy match with Gennady Golovkin.
Jermall Charlo was fully exonerated two weeks ago on three counts of second degree felony robbery charges related to a restaurant incident in July 2021 in San Antonio. A misunderstanding over the boxer’s debit card being initially declined for services rendered led to a dispute which he believed resolved, only to receive an arrest warrant three weeks later. All charges were dropped after investigators confirmed by video evidence the boxer’s innocence of any wrongdoing in the use for payment of his debit card. Investigators determined video surveillance confirmed Charlo’s insistence that the incident in question was merely a misunderstanding over his payment card originally being declined due to a fraud alert on the first try. The fraud alert is a common issue for security reasons experienced by Chase Bank debit card holders.
The initial incident report in that incident stated Charlo allegedly stole cash from a guest check portfolio, and had accused a waiter of trying to steal his debit card, while retrieving his driver’s license from another portfolio. The report also suggested conflicting information regarding the sequence of events, and the facts surrounding the alleged reported incident.
The troubles of the Charlo brothers continue. Previously, A Dallas Texas jury acquitted Jermell Charlo on charges of attacking a former girlfriend. A three-day trial produced no injuries or evidence to match claims of an assault. Jermell, who faced two counts of felony domestic violence, was found not guilty by jury trial.
