Artur Beterbiev Stops Marcus Browne in Ninth Round of Canada

By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent

Montreal, Canada (September 18th, 2021)– A bloody Artur Beterbiev, bleeding from the center of the forehead down into his eyes after a clash of heads in round three for the rest of the bout, landed a volley of head and body shots punctuating with a finishing liver shot which sent challenger Marcus Browne down to his knees in a corner where he took the full ten count at 46 seconds of round nine, in the main event of an eight-round card at Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada, promoted by Top Rank, to retain his World Boxing Council and International Boxing Federation World Light Heavyweight titles.

The cut between the eyes of Beterbiev on his forehead resembled the cut sustained by the late Marvelous Marvin Hagler in the first round of his middleweight titular defense against Thomas Hearns at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas in 1985. Browne also had severe cuts above his right eye, making the entire bout messy business till its ultimate knockout conclusion.

Browne started strongly, and Beterbiev started slow, enabling Browne to outwork him for the first two rounds. Beterbiev then landed power shots with pressure for the next seven rounds, and no amount of holding or retreat by Browne could postpone the inevitable. Browne, who also went down in round seven, was down seven points on the scorecards when he went down for the second time in round nine. Browne could not win the bout. Broken down and battered, Browne made no effort to get up after going down a second time.

Beterbiev wants to fight Canelo Alvarez and the best fighters out there. “I am happy for this win. I am always learning from new experiences (referring to the forehead cut),” noted Beterbiev.

Result: Artur Beterbiev KO 9 Marcus Browne, Light Heavyweights (0:46). Beterbiev retains World Boxing Council and International Boxing Federation World Light Heavyweight titles. Referee: Michael Griffin. Browne down in seventh and ninth rounds.
