Jamie Mitchell Upsets Shannon Courtenay, Wins WBA Female World Bantamweight Title

By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent

Liverpool, UK (October 9th, 2021)– Unbeaten but unknown Jamie “Miracle” Mitchell of Las Vegas, Nevada, scored a major upset on Saturday, October 9, 2021, at Echo Arena in Liverpool, United Kingdom, dethroning defending world champion Shannon Cortenay by ten round majority decision to win the Female World Bantamweight title.

Mitchell, 7-0-2 with four knockouts, was on superior footing before the bout started, after Courtenay weighed in 2.5 pounds over the 118 pounds limit, and lost her world title on the scale. Courtenay, 7-2 with three knockouts, Watford, Hertfordshire, United Kingdom, joined Anthony Joshua as another former champion from that location. Courtenay demanded a rematch, but if you cannot make weight for your own world title in the first place, and you take a hometown pounding, a rematch would seem a miserable excuse to sell tickets. Mitchell claimed she went overweight and lost the bout because she had her period.

Coming forward with pressure and outworking Courtenay on the ropes, Mitchell outworked and outlanded Courtenay, who boxed well in reply but had a swollen left eye by the end of the sixth round. Courtenay landed good combinations in the eighth round, but Mitchell rallied back in the ninth and tenth round, outworking Courtenay to the point her face was swollen on the left side. The scoring was closer than the actual bout, but Mitchell clearly won it.
