Robert Brizel’s opinion of the Canelo vs. Plant Presser
By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent
The world super-middleweight 168 pounds titular unification match between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Caleb “Sweethands” Plant, scheduled for November 9, 2021, at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, is in serious jeopardy, thanks to a bloody exchange of punches worthy of the video game “Mike Tyson’s Punch Out” at the September 21, 2021 press conference. Who got the better of the grossly stupid exchange of words and punches is up to how you interpret it.
International Boxing Federation World Super Middleweight champion Plant, 21-0 with 12 knockouts, Las Vegas, Nevada, called Canelo a drug cheat, a reply to his testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs. Canelo, 56-1-2 with 28 knockouts, Guadalajara, Mexico, who holds the World Boxing Council, World Boxing Association, and World Boxing Organization World Super Middleweight titles, did not like Plant’s choice of words. Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder are tame compared to the madness which happened next.
At the press conference, Plant accused Canelo of roid rage and called him “motherf#*ker”. Canelo shoved Plant, who then punched Canelo with a sneaky left hook to the jaw. Canelo punched Plant back with a right hand, opening a big bloody gash below Plant’s right eye which bled profusely, and which will probably require stitches. That being the case, the Alvarez versus Plant unification November 2021 bout is probably in danger of being postponed. Plant demonstrated his superior hand speed, then got it back in his face from Canelo in spades. It is insane incidents like these that ruin reputations and careers.
Yes, boxing readership, Plant threw away millions to prove his point. Plant’s point is not taken lightly. Alvarez has tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs on more than one occasion. Many fighters are on the sauce, yet get off with a slap on the wrist, or almost no punishment at all, not even losing their titles. Plant’s frustration describes a critical corridor in professional boxing for the moment, when combined with the coronavirus, professional boxers feel overly vulnerable.
Here is Caleb Plant, an established world champion, willing to accept the Canelo unification bout for the money, but not willing to sacrifice his moral and ethical principles to the boxing establishment. It’s a sad state of affairs when the biggest draws in boxing are allowed to bend the rules and get away with it. If Plant has done his homework, he should just fight Canelo and prove he is the better man at 168 pounds. Just do it inside the ring, not outside the ring. With the new cut, he may not get the chance after all. Canelo is also wrong to egotistically respond to Plant’s ego as well. I mean, it’s like Larry Holmes or Floyd Mayweather at the mic on a bad day all over again.
