Los Angeles, CA (August 14th, 2021)– In yet another 2021 boxing twist, the continued comeback of former World Boxing Council World Super Middleweight champion David Benavidez, 24-0 with 21 knockouts, Phoenix, Arizona, on USA Showtime, against 31-4 former International Boxing Federation World Super Middleweight champion Jose Uzcategui of Mexico, scheduled for August 28, 2021, at Phoenix Arena, is postponed. The bout will be rescheduled after Benavidez recovers.
Benavidez has tested positive for the COVID-19 Novel Coronavirus.
Benavidez, who stopped 18-1-2 Ron Ellis in the eleventh round at Mohegan Sun Casino, in Uncaville, Connecticut, on March 13, 2021, lost his WBC world title on the scales when he missed weight by several pounds against Challenger Roamer Alexis Angulo, also at Mohegan Sun Casino. Benavidez stopped Angulo after ten rounds on August 15, 2021, but has not held a world title in three years.
27-1 welterweight contender Jose Benavidez Jr., David’s brother, is now moved up to the main event and will fight 17-3 Francisco Emanuel Torres of Buenos Aires, Argentina in a scheduled 10 rounder. Torres will be looking for his tenth consecutive win in the bout. 19-1 Super welterweight prospect Brian Mendoza, and 22-2-1 featherweight prospect Keenan Carbajal are also featured in separate 10 rounders on the seven bout USA Showtime card.
