Shocker in Thailand: Pradabsri Decisions 54-0 WBC World Champion Moonsri in Upset

Bangkok, Thailand (November 28th, 2020)– After 13 years and 55 professional bouts, Chayaphon Moonsri (Wanheng Menayothin) is no longer the World Boxing Council World Minimumweight champion. After one year’s inactivity, and a stated retirement, Moonsri, 54-1 with 18 knockouts, Bangkok, Thailand, returned to the ring anyway and was decisioned by Thai compatriot Panya Pradabsri (Petchmanee CP Freshmart), 35-1 with 22 knockouts, Bangkok, Thailand. Scores of 115-113 across the board spoke for a close but unanimous decision for the WBC number three worldwide rated challenger, on Friday, November 27, 2020, at City Hall Ground, Nakhon Swon, Thailand. Some spectators were in attendance. The event did not appear extra special, despite Moonsri’s 54-0 record coming into the bout.
Pradabsri had 14 bouts title experiences in PABA, OPBF, World Boxing Council and World Boxing Association minimumweight and light flyweight regional bouts in his six years as a professional, and at 29 years of age, and with six bouts won in the past 12 months despite the coronavirus pandemic, had the advantage of both youth and remaining active.
Moonsri, at age 35, landed the hard shots, and the YouTube video of the 12 round bout appeared to show Moonsri as the slight winner by virtue of his landing the harder power shots. However, Pradabsri, the World Boxing Council Asian Boxing Council Minimumweight regional champion, impressed the local Thai judges with his consistent and accurate jabbing attack. The local Thailand judges saw it from more of a technical standpoint, as opposed to who landed the more effective blows. As such the bout might have been scored evenly or slightly in Moonsri’s favor overall in the United States or Europe based on the style of fght and the judging. A rematch is possible in 2021, if Moonsri wants one. Moonsri recently came out of retirement in 2020 to sign with Golden Boy. Floyd Mayweather’s 50-0 record is no longer at stake, nor did Floyd attempt to sign Moonsri before this bout. Just as well. If the coronavirus is a jinx, as well as fighters, getting lazy about the gym and allowing for inactivity, Moonsri’s inactivity could not have helped.
