WBA Featherweight Champion Ernesto Marcel of Panama Dies at 72, Defeated Alexis Arguello

New York, NY (July 1st, 2020)– Retired World Boxing Association World Featherweight champion Ernesto Marcel has died in his native Panama City, Panama at age 72. Marcel compiled a career record of 40-4-2 with 23 knockouts, and won a unanimous 15 round decision over Alexis Arguello to retain his title in February 1974 in Panama City in his final bout, retiring at age 25. Marcel remained a private figure after that. Marcel’s career included wins over Samuel Serrano, Spider Nemoto and Antonio Gomez. He also fought fellow Panamanian Roberto Duran in 1970 but was stopped. Marcel is one of the few fighters to retire as world champion.
